Life expectancy dropped by nearly two years during the COVID-19 pandemic, eliminating a decade of progress, the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Friday. The annual Health Statistics Report found that between 2019 and 2021, global life expectancy dropped 1.8 years to 71.4 years, which was the same level as in 2012. A previous study published in the Lancet in March estimated that global life expectancy had fallen by some 1.6 years during the pandemic. The health agency said the decrease showed that health gains are “fragile” with COVID-19 erasing years of progress. “This is the world's re...

Four years after the outbreak, the world is finally recovering from COVID-19. The global community has learned many lessons to prepare for the next pandemic, yet others seem to remain unheeded. One of the profound lessons learned is that viruses respect no borders or boundaries made by man and that pandemics are truly a global threat in this interconnected world. The public health community also agrees that there will be more pandemics. Therefore, the key element of our preparation for the next global health crisis is a cooperation network built upon a “no-one-left-behind” approach. Unfortunat...

The 194 member countries of the World Health Organization (WHO) have failed to achieve a breakthrough on a long-sought pandemic preparedness treaty. The latest round of negotiations began nearly two weeks ago in Geneva and were described as the UN health agency's final push to forge an agreement on a draft text. The next steps are unclear. The goal was to have the so-called "pandemic treaty" adopted at this year's World Health Assembly, which is the WHO's supreme decision-making body. The meeting is due to be held starting at the end of May. In the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, WHO members ca...
