It comes as the bloc braces itself for a potential wave of disinformation in the run up to June’s European elections, and amid fears it is profoundly unprepared to tackle new forms of hybrid warfare. In a speech delivered at the Copenhagen Democracy Summit on Tuesday morning, von der Leyen said she was "concerned" about the rise of disinformation and foreign interference in Europe, warning that the "core tenets of our democracy" were under attack. Speaking in her capacity as lead candidate for the centre-right European People's Party (EPP)- which is topping the pan-EU poll - she promised to se...

A new global study has found that dissatisfaction with democracy is deepening in parts of Europe, where governments are not living up to the democratic expectations of their citizens. The Democracy Perception Index (DPI) is the biggest global temperature test of democracy, with almost 63,000 people from 53 countries, including 15 members of the European Union, surveyed between February and April this year. On 25 April Portugal celebrates 50 years of democracy. Since its 1974 revolution, it has embraced freedom of the press, free elections, and the right to healthcare, to strike and to education. But as with every year's April 25 celebrations, the country is discussing what still needs to be done. There is much to celebrate. Raquel Varela, social historian at NOVA University Lisbon, singles out the revolution's legacy of workers' rights, which had never previously existed in the country. She also points to the construction of the National Health Service and the education system which, in her opin...

When, in January, the EU Commission appointed German Christian Democrat MEP Markus Pieper for a new position as a small business envoy, it sparked an outcry. The reason: Markus Pieper scored worse than other candidates for the plum position with almost 19.000 euros per month. The recruitment drew accusations of cronyism, as Pieper belongs to the same political party as Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. Four fellow Commissioners protested in writing, and the European Parliament in a landslide vote asked von der Leyen to rescind the hire. This week, on what should have been his first da...

Europe's journey over three-quarters of a century reflects a vision articulated by one of its founding fathers, Robert Schuman: "Europe will not be made all at once, or according to a single plan. It will be built through concrete achievements." In keeping with Schuman's foresight, Europe has evolved step by step, with each achievement profoundly improving the lives of its citizens. This evolving Europe transcends geographical definitions, embodying a community committed to human rights, democracy, and the rule of law. These values, championed by the Council of Europe, the leading organisation...

The UN's top human rights official has issued a warning about Hungary's upcoming presidential election, saying the country shows signs of sliding into autocracy and authoritarianism. Speaking to the Human Rights Council, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk cited Hungary as an example of a state that has turned away from liberal democracy in favour of a harsher, more restrictive political model. "Autocracy and military coups are the negation of democracy. Every election – even an imperfect one – constitutes an effort to at least formally acknowledge the universal aspiration to dem...
