The countdown to this year's EU parliament elections is well underway, but in many countries, the battle for votes seems to be being fought along national, not continental, lines. The dynamic is especially strong in France, where the EU elections are being framed by some parties as a forerunner to the 2027 presidential race – or "first and foremost mid-term elections", in the words of Jordan Bardella, head of list for the far-right Rassemblement National party, who is calling to "sanction Macron's Europe". "If I'm in the lead, I'll obviously ask for the National Assembly to be dissolved that v...

They're between 16 and 23 years old, we don't know how many are going to vote, but the priorities of the most politically engaged seem pretty clear: climate, equality and security. Over the last two years, the European Union has been involved in episodes that call into question democracy, the rule of law and fundamental rights. In 2022, several current and former members of the European Parliament were accused of involvement in a corruption scandal over money influence, which allegedly involved Qatar, Morocco and Mauritania. The Belgian Federal Prosecutor’s Office mentioned "large sums of money" and "substantial gifts" paid by a Persian Gulf country with the aim of influencing European Union policies. Fifteen years have passed since the last update of a European Union treaty. Signed in 2007 and into force since 2009, the Treaty of Lisbon clarified the division of competences between the EU and its member states, gave the EU its own legal personality and provided for the first time a formal procedure for the withdrawal of a member state from the Union. Since then, enlargement has been one of the reasons regularly put forward by those in favour of reforming the EU's institutions, treaties and budget, but it is far from the only one. The war in Ukraine, the digital and energy transition, the f...

The Constitutional Court in Belgium has ruled that 17 and 16-year-olds must vote in European elections on 9 June. Voting in Belgium is obligatory for adults 18 and older, with failure to do so resulting in a fine. Adults who fail to turn up at polling stations at least four times in a 15-year period risk losing their right to vote. Those under 18 were previously exempt from this obligatory voting requirement, however. But now the country's court has suspended the provision that only made voting mandatory for adults. The ruling means that youngsters can be sanctioned if they fail to turn out. A...

How much of our legislation comes from the European Union? It’s been a lingering debate for many years now with multiple Eurosceptic and even Europhile politicians claiming the EU imposes 80% of its laws on member states. The problem with quantifying the amount of laws is finding accurate and recent figures. Previous studies that looked into this found the EU’s influence to be significantly less: more like 20-25%, according to this French study from 2009. Most studies do maintain that while the EU heavily regulates some areas, the answer is not that straightforward. That's because, in some are...
