By Mahera Dutta BOOM’s video series ‘Facts Neeti’ sought to capture what leaders across the political spectrum thought about fake news, especially in light of the 2024 general elections. Our primary focus was to find out leaders’ opinions about how misinformation adversely impacts the electoral process. We asked them if they thought fake news was a problem if they had ever been a victim of it themselves, and what policies can be brought in to curb the rise of misinformation. Who we interviewed: Party members from the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP), Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), Indian National Congr...

Malicious attempts to influence users on Meta’s platforms mostly focussed on local rather than the upcoming EU elections, a threat report published by Meta today (29 May) suggests. “While we’ve seen public discourse ahead of the EU parliamentary elections focus primarily on foreign threats, the majority of the EU-focused inauthentic behaviour we’ve disrupted so far has been domestic in nature,” the mid-year update into the global threat landscape, said. Most of the attempts to spread fake news were made at citizens in member state and were linked to individuals associated with local campaigns ...

The European Union has announced a ban on four media outlets accused of spreading pro-Kremlin propaganda and "destabilising" Ukraine's neighbouring countries. The four blacklisted outlets - Voice of Europe, RIA Novosti, Izvestia and Rossiyskaya Gazeta - are "under the permanent direct or indirect control" of Russia and have been "instrumental" in fostering support for its illegal invasion of Ukraine, the European Council said in a statement on Friday. "The Russian Federation has engaged in a systematic, international campaign of media and information manipulation (...) to justify and support i...

It comes as the bloc braces itself for a potential wave of disinformation in the run up to June’s European elections, and amid fears it is profoundly unprepared to tackle new forms of hybrid warfare. In a speech delivered at the Copenhagen Democracy Summit on Tuesday morning, von der Leyen said she was "concerned" about the rise of disinformation and foreign interference in Europe, warning that the "core tenets of our democracy" were under attack. Speaking in her capacity as lead candidate for the centre-right European People's Party (EPP)- which is topping the pan-EU poll - she promised to se...

Paris (AFP) - US singer Katy Perry said even her own mother was fooled by AI-generated fake images she posted Tuesday of herself pretending to attend the Met Gala in New York. "Couldn't make it to the MET, I had to work," the "Firework" singer wrote to her 207 million followers on Instagram. But two photos with it appear to show Perry on the famous steps of the Metropolitan Museum, which hosted the glitziest fashion night of the year on Monday. One had her wearing a huge floral dress, while a second had her in a warrior-style bronze bustier and grass petticoat. She put her location as "Met...

Meta’s Facebook and Instagram last week (30 April) became subject to an investigation under the EU’s online platform rules for seemingly lacking the robustness to counter Russian disinformation, the latest in a series of probes into platforms’ handling of the Digital Services Act (DSA). Baltic and Nordic NGOs and researchers have painted a bleak picture of big tech's efforts to stop pro-Kremlin trolls, and doubt if these probes will put a halt to ongoing disinformation campaigns aimed at undermining NATO and the EU, while trying to bolster Russia’s credibility. Faktabaari, a Finnish fact-check...

Washington (AFP) - A fabricated audio clip of a US high school principal prompted a torrent of outrage, leaving him battling allegations of racism and anti-Semitism in a case that has sparked new alarm about AI manipulation. Police charged a disgruntled staff member at the Maryland school with manufacturing the recording that surfaced in January -- purportedly of principal Eric Eiswert ranting against Jews and "ungrateful Black kids" -- using artificial intelligence. The clip, which left administrators of Pikesville High School fielding a flood of angry calls and threats, underscores the ease ...

Washington (AFP) - Illegal immigration on the US southern border is a top talking point among Republican politicians, but some are taking it a step further by promoting disinformation about non-citizens voting in the presidential election. With the election possibly to be decided by several thousand votes in battleground states, social media has filled up with allegations that foreigners are entering the country to swing the poll in favor of President Joe Biden. AFP has extensively debunked those claims in both English and Spanish, explaining that non-citizens cannot vote in federal elections ...

The Russian disinformation network Pravda is expanding its hold in the European Union despite attempts to stop it. That’s according to a new report from the European Digital Media Observatory, an independent fact-checking organisation. France’s Viginum Agency operated by their national defence and security department (SGDSN) first detected Pravda’s activities in February as part of a wide-ranging Russian disinformation campaign in the EU.
