Scientists have discovered what could be the first known smooth hammerhead shark nursery in the Galápagos. The vulnerable shark species - so-called for its elongated head which forms a straighter curve than the scalloped hammerhead - is rarely spotted in the marine reserve. The Galapagos Islands is doubling its entry fee for tourists. From August 2024, visitors from most countries will be required to pay $200 (€184), up from $100 (€92) currently. A volcano on an island in the Galápagos could threaten the survival of the last known survivor of a species of giant tortoise. The La Cumbre volcano on Fernandina island began erupting on Saturday night, lighting up the nighttime sky as lava tumbled down its sides toward the sea.
