Spain’s drought-stricken region of Catalonia will install a floating desalination plant to help the city of Barcelona guarantee its drinking water supply, regional authorities said Thursday. Barcelona already relies on Europe’s largest desalination plant for domestic use to compensate over three years of below average rainfall that have led to a historic drought made worse by climate change. In February, Catalonia's regional government declared a drought emergency for much of the surrounding region. Now Spain’s second-largest city will get a temporary second desalination plant in its port late...

Los Angeles (AFP) - Sometimes all you have to do is ask for "HELP": That's what three men stranded on a deserted Pacific island learned earlier this week, writing the message in palm fronds which were spotted by US rescuers. The trio, all experienced mariners in their 40s, became stranded on a lonely island after setting off from Micronesia's Polowat Atoll on March 31 in their motor-powered skiff which subsequently experienced damage. They were reported missing last Saturday by a woman who told the US Coast Guard her three uncles never returned from Pikelot Atoll, a tiny island in the remote W...

Ten regions of Kazakhstan have declared states of emergency after strong floods hit the entire northwest of the country. The flooding was sparked by a sudden and early period of warm weather that caused huge amounts of snow to melt and overfill numerous rivers across parts of Kazakhstan and Russia. Kazakh president Kasym-Zhomart Tokayev called the floods "the worst in 80 years". More than 72,000 people have been evacuated. The national army has been deployed on rescue and aid missions across the regions. On Sunday, Russia’s government declared the situation in flood-hit areas in the Orenburg r...

Lava from a volcanic eruption in Iceland flowed Sunday toward defences around the town of Grindavik, which have so far held the molten rock back from the evacuated community. Scientists said the eruption appeared to be weakening and would probably peter out within hours. A volcanic system on the Reykjanes Peninsula in the country's southwest erupted late Saturday for the fourth time in three months, sending orange jets of lava into the night sky. Iceland’s Meteorological Office said the eruption opened a fissure in the earth about 3 kilometers (almost 2 miles) long between the mountains of Stó...

New York (AFP) - A bustling central New York street was shrouded in vapor when a pipe carrying steam for heating homes and businesses unexpectedly failed on Wednesday, partially closing the busy tourist area. Plumes of steam escaping the centralized heating and hot water system that runs under the city's streets are not uncommon, but New York Mayor Eric Adams said local people were recommended to wear masks as a precaution. Some steam pipes are lined with asbestos, an insulating material associated with lung cancer and other life-threatening diseases. "The cause of the leak is still under inve...

New York (AFP) - President Joe Biden declared a state of emergency in the northeastern US state of Vermont Tuesday as heavy rains triggered flooding from which dozens of residents were rescued by boat. The move, which frees up funds to help relief efforts, came after officials warned that a dam close to the state capital Montpelier was nearing capacity and close to spilling into a river. "This has never happened since the dam was built so there is no precedent for potential damage," Montpelier city manager William Fraser said in a statement late Monday, referring to the Wrightsville Dam. There...

New York (AFP) - The northeastern United States was inundated Monday with heavy rain and flooding across several states a day after storms and flash floods washed out highways and killed one person in New York state. Parts of New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and Vermont were under flood warnings, with states in the region recording rapid rainfall and "life threatening" flash floods, according to the National Weather Service (NWS). Heavy rains in New York state on Sunday turned streets into raging waterways, washing out bridges, leaving roads impassable and leading...

Washington (AFP) - The White House said Monday that the national and public health emergencies declared just as the Covid-19 pandemic took grip three years ago will officially end May 11. The end to both federal emergency declarations, which took effect in January 2020 under then-president Donald Trump, will see funds used to subsidize Covid medicines, medical insurance and other types of government aid related to the pandemic come to an end. In practice, part of these government assistance programs has already dried up due to opposition from Congress. The remaining debate is largely political...
