Greek 17-year-olds will be able to vote for the first time in the upcoming 2024 European elections. Three students from a school in Athens express their concerns and hopes for the continent in an interview with Euronews, ahead of the June poll. "It's a very good opportunity for us, as young people aged 17, to influence the direction of Europe. Through our votes, we can help reshape the European Parliament by electing representatives who better reflect our ideas and our will for Europe, the Europe that we want to see in the future," Simela Mavromati, a student in Athens, told Euronews. Estonia is home to nearly 300,000 Russians, actively participating in elections, including the upcoming European Parliament elections. Generally, they tend to vote for Russian-speaking candidates. Jana Toom is one of the most popular among candidates. Her supporters are rather pro-European and distance themselves from Kremlin's actions and aims. "First thing we need is so-called political nations. We don't have it in Estonia. In Estonia, we measure it by DNA so to say. I absolutely refuse to make Russian-speaking children in Estonia responsible for what Putin is doing," she told Euronews. 'I w...

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen currently finds herself in a state of anxiety, and it's easy to see why. From the controversial appointment of her ally Markus Pieper to a €17k per month job, to her diminishing influence within both the EU and her party, the Christian Democratic Union of Germany (CDU), her campaign is not going as planned. Additionally, her recent discord with Manfred Weber, the European People’s Party (EPP) leader, further complicates matters. At first glance, her prospects of clinching another win in the forthcoming MEP vote as the EPP's frontrunner may sti...

Europe’s far-right political parties unofficially launched their campaign on Sunday for European Union elections in Spain with strong messages against illegal migration and the bloc’s climate policy while also declaring their support for Israel in its war against Hamas. French National Rally party leader Marine Le Pen and Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni tried to rally voters at an event organised by Spain’s far-right Vox party in Madrid. Analysts say the vote across the bloc’s 27 nations could see a strong rise of the far right. Meloni, whose Brothers of Italy party has foundations in Be...

Despite its local dimension, traditionally the Catalan election has a relevant influence over the whole Spanish political arena, even when it comes to the EU elections. According to the Spanish political arena and public opinion, it is highly likely that the ongoing arduous negotiations to form a local government among the political forces in Barcelona are going to sway the campaign for the EU vote that will take place on 9th June. The backbreaking negotiations have just started. The Socialists (a member of S&D in Strasbourg) have won, yet they did not reach a sufficient number of seats to rul...

Ahead of the European Parliament elections that will take place 6-9 June 2024, the letter, #CulturalDealEU (CDEU) is headed by the European Culture Foundation (ECF) alongside Culture Action Europe and Europa Nostra and has demanded that “culture to be explicitly included in the electoral manifestoes and platforms of parties and political groups.” The open letter from the Netherlands-based charity notes the importance of culture to the ideological goals of the European Union, to promote integration of member states through valuing the individual cultures of each nation. “Culture ignites citizen...

The shooting of Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico is an example of the more serious acts of political violence in parts of the European Union. It was the first attempt on the life of a European head of state since 2003, and reflects a growing polarisation across the continent. Eric Maurice, researcher at the European Policy Centre, said there are numerous factors behind the discontent. ''It's true that on the one hand, we can see in the election results a rise in the extremes, in the radical forces, on both the right and the left, with an increasingly uninhibited political language, in verb...

The campaign for the European elections is in full swing in Germany but has been overshadowed by recent attacks on politicians. The violence has been fuelling the debate on whether democracy is under threat. Last month, politician Matthias Ecke from the Social Democrats (SPD) spent several days in hospital after being beaten up whilst hanging up campaign posters. Green politicians have also experienced a recent spike in threats. Green party candidate Yvonne Mosler was spat on and threatened last week whilst campaigning. She said she has noticed how the attitude towards politicians has changed ...
