The “Light in Life” exhibition will take place on the 132-hectare site and will be open from May 4 to September 29. The sculptures, made mostly of stainless steel, are spread across vegetation’s Kew to reflect the greenery of the site. Quinn says: ’Kew approached me to do something and I came down, and I hadn't been for a long time. And when I came here and realised that they have hundreds of scientists doing research and horticulturists and I spent more and more time here, I realised that there was a whole show to do here, so we worked together to do that.’ The exhibition aims to attract more...

I’ve seen Picasso’s "Guernica". I’ve stood in front of Michelangelo’s David. I’ve found myself in a trance when faced with Francis Bacon’s “Study after Velázquez's Portrait of Pope Innocent X”. But I’d never seen anything quite like the immersive Klimt exhibition. I experienced it during a recent visit to Warsaw. After having sampled the many culinary joys of Poland’s capital (which are numerous and yummy), I ended up at the Klimt event after having been somewhat duped by guides and online reviews to visit the Soho Factory in the old post-industrial area in Praga – Warsaw's east riverside “alt...

Well, there goes another eventful week. Mona Lisa is moving, AI beauty pageants are a thing, and there's also a new Eminem album on the horizon. Yet none of these announcements could detract from what the internet really cares about right now: Challengers. Yes, Luca Guadagnino's new film, a titillating tennis-themed loved triangle starring Zendaya, is out at cinemas and serving memes (and thirst posts) left, right and centre (more on this below.) Away from all that racket, here's what else is happening around Europe to love. ExhibitionVenice biennale 2024 The 60th edition of the Venice Biennal...

Portugal today marks the 50th anniversary of the Carnation Revolution, the country's peaceful transition from one of the longest authoritarian governments in Europe to democracy. A pivotal moment in the country's history, it earned its named because people handed out carnations to soldiers in a bloodless coup led by group of left-wing group of army officers who overthrew the government of António de Oliveira Salazar, which had ruled the country since 1932. It also marked the end of the Portuguese Colonial War in which Lisbon was fighting independence movements in colonies in Angola and Mozambi...

First Nations artist, Archie Moore, has clinched the prestigious Golden Lion Award for Best National Participation at the 60th edition of the Venice Biennale. This is the first time an Australian artist has received this honour. Moore's work "Kith and Kin" explores his Australian aboriginal and British ancestry and spans an incredible 65,000 years. Moore traced his family history back to create a family tree, which he carefully drew in chalk on the black walls of the Australia Pavilion. The work thus examines First Nation Australian history and the impact of colonisation. In a speech recognisi...

Sunsets in calm ports, ships in waveless waters, and young men and women looking into the distance - these serene scenes encapsulate the essence of German Romanticism as depicted by the renowned painter Caspar David Friedrich. Now, the Alte Nationalgalerie in Berlin is hosting a major exhibition showcasing 115 of his landscape masterpieces. The showcase honours the 250th anniversary of Friedrich's birth, who is hailed as one of Germany's preeminent artists over the past two centuries. But Friedrich's artistic legacy wasn't always celebrated. Born in Greifswald, northeastern Germany, in 1774, h...

Entitled ‘Foreigners Everywhere’, the 2024 Venice Biennale has at its core the exploration of identity. The international show is notably - and for some anachronistically - organised into national pavilions. Prompted by the theme, many countries have chosen to examine ideas of nationhood, belonging and foreignness. Collectively, however, this also raises the question of how valid the Biennale’s division of exhibitors into national showrooms continues to be. ‘You are always, deep down inside, a foreigner’The 60th edition of the international exhibition, curated by Adriano Pedrosa, takes its tit...

Not long after the Sony World Photography Award Creative Category winner was announced last year, the victor came clean with a surprising revelation. German photographer Boris Eldagsen admitted that his first prize-winning photograph ‘The Electrician’ was actually an AI-generated image. Eldagsen had created the image using the popular AI-image creating tool DALL-E 2. He turned down the prize, citing his motivation for entering to see if “competitions are prepared for AI images. They are not.” A year on from his famous refusal, the Palmer Gallery in London is hosting an exhibition of his and ot...

A major collateral exhibition at the 2024 Venice Biennale will be dedicated to the iconography and symbolism of breasts. They are a fixture of art, whether it’s a 16th-century devotional painting of the breastfeeding Virgin or a wearable breastplate from 20th-century fashion design, as the show highlights. ‘Breasts’, at Palazzo Franchetti, showcases works from old masters to modern publicity, spanning the realms of painting, sculpture, photography and film. Curated by Carolina Pasti, the show reflects on a range of themes including motherhood, empowerment, sexuality, body image and illness. It...
