Scientists have confirmed the presence of a whale off New England that went extinct in the Atlantic Ocean two centuries ago. It is an exciting discovery, but one they said illustrates the impact of climate change on sea life. Researchers with the New England Aquarium in Boston found the gray whale while flying 50 kilometres south of Nantucket, Massachusetts in the US on 1 March. A volcano on an island in the Galápagos could threaten the survival of the last known survivor of a species of giant tortoise. The La Cumbre volcano on Fernandina island began erupting on Saturday night, lighting up the nighttime sky as lava tumbled down its sides toward the sea.
