A painting that was once thought to be worth the price of a MacBook has been newly verified as a multimillion-dollar masterpiece by the Baroque painter Carvaggio and is now on show in the Prado. ‘Ecce Homo’ was painted by Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio in the 17th century around 1605-1609, close to his death in 1610. The painting, which shows Pontius Pilate as he presents the bound Jesus to the masses and utters the infamous Latin phrase for “behold the man” is now on show to the masses in Madrid’s famous Prado museum. Ecce ‘Ecce Homo’ indeed. The art of deception: How the 'Ripley' series u...

British artist Damien Hirst is once again accused of falsifying the age of his artworks. An investigation by The Guardian has claimed that at least 1,000 of the 10,000 paintings used in Hirst’s 2022 project ‘The Currency’ were created at a later date than originally suggested. In 2022, Hirst made headlines with ‘The Currency’, an experimental art project where the artist sold 10,000 of his paintings to buyers who could choose whether they would rather receive the works in physical or NFT form. Any paintings that were bought in NFT form were then burnt at an event held in October 2022. In total...

When the Nazis decided to wade into the Spanish Civil War in 1937 in support of their fascist ally Francisco Franco, they did so by dropping bombs indiscriminately on the Basque town of Guernica. No distinction was made by those flying overhead between civilians and militants: many hundreds died, most of them women and children. It was a bitter foretaste of what was to come. In the years which followed, civilian bombing became a hallmark of the changing face of modern warfare, the term blitzkrieg soon entering international parlance. Not long after the Sony World Photography Award Creative Category winner was announced last year, the victor came clean with a surprising revelation. German photographer Boris Eldagsen admitted that his first prize-winning photograph ‘The Electrician’ was actually an AI-generated image. Eldagsen had created the image using the popular AI-image creating tool DALL-E 2. He turned down the prize, citing his motivation for entering to see if “competitions are prepared for AI images. They are not.” A year on from his famous refusal, the Palmer Gallery in London is hosting an exhibition of his and ot...
