The EU should appoint a dedicated carbon capture and storage (CCS) envoy, say supporters of the climate fix where carbon dioxide captured at source and pumped underground for permanent storage, but critics fear a renewed focus on the technology merely distracts from the need to stop burning fossil fuels. Brussels-based trade association CCS Europe – whose members include US energy equipment firm GE and oilfield services company Baker Hughes alongside industries such as cement production and waste incineration – made its call on Wednesday (15 May) as it presented an action plan outlining what i...

A circular economy has become a key model in the drive for countries to protect the environment while fostering economic growth. The main aim is to reuse and recycle existing materials and products for as long as possible. A new report by the Circular Economy Network (CEN) and the National Agency for New Technology, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development (ENEA) has compared the EU’s five biggest economies and their commitment to sustainable production and consumption. Here’s how Italy, France, Germany, Spain and Poland compare in terms of waste management, innovation and ecological sustai...

World leaders are gathering in Paris today to tackle one of the world’s biggest silent killers: dirty cooking fuels. In Africa, where four in five people cook over open fires and basic stoves, it is the second leading cause of premature deaths among women and children. Convened by the International Energy Agency (IEA) at UNESCO headquarters, the Summit on Clean Cooking in Africa is set to announce a major sum and solutions to tackle the issue. “I believe if your neighbour’s house is burning, you help them. Africa is our neighbour,” IEA executive director Dr Fatih Birol told Euronews Green ahea...

Fossil fuels provided less than a quarter of the EU’s energy for the first time in April. The good news comes from energy think tank Ember which found that the proportion of electricity generated by fossil fuels in the bloc fell to a record low of 23 per cent last month - a sharp drop of 22 per cent compared to April 2023 despite an increase in demand. It also surpasses the previous record low of 27 per cent from May 2023. Wind and solar growth as well as the recovery of hydropower drove the fall in fossil fuel generation and increased the share of renewables in the electricity mix to a record...

The European elections are approaching and with them the usual hand-wringing about a lack of interest from the electorate. The European Union is a behemoth, involved in so many things that even the biggest political enthusiasts find it difficult to keep track. In the lead-up to June’s elections, expect to see slick campaigns from the institutions and politicians making speeches telling you why you should vote. But sometimes, breaking down a simple example can be the most effective way to highlight the EU’s impact on our lives. What are low emission zones? One example of an EU initiative that af...

Europe’s biggest pork producer has admitted that a claim its meat is “more climate-friendly than you think” violated marketing law. Danish Crown was ruled to have misled consumers by Denmark’s high court last month, in a case brought by two NGOs that marked the country’s first climate lawsuit. Campaigners from the Vegetarian Society of Denmark and the Climate Movement Association enjoyed partial success on 1 March. The Western High Court agreed the company should not have put stickers on its packaging declaring its pigs were “climate controlled”. But the court rejected the NGOs’ second claim t...

EU lawmakers rejected the inclusion of a life-cycle assessment methodology to account for greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the transport sector during a plenary session in Brussels. So-called CountEmissionsEU, the accounting of GHG emissions of transport services law tabled by the European Commission in July 2023, aims to provide a single harmonised approach to tally emissions arising from vehicle manufacturing, maintenance, and disposal. A so-called 'life-cycle' approach to assessment of electric vehicles, for example, would account for the impact from raw material extraction to manufacturin...

Humanity has only two years left “to save the world” by making dramatic changes in the way it spews heat-trapping emissions according to the head of the United Nations climate agency. It has even less time to act to get the finances behind such a massive shift. Governments of the world are facing a 2025 deadline for new and stronger plans to curb carbon pollution, nearly half of the world's populations voting in elections this year, and crucial global finance meetings are taking place later this month in Washington. United Nations executive climate secretary Simon Stiell said Wednesday he know...

Large volumes of climate-warming gases are being smuggled into Europe from China and Turkey, a new investigation has found. The illegal trafficking is compromising the global push to phase them out, a report by the London-based Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA) said this week. These hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), described by the EIA as “super-pollutant”, are a group of synthetic gases that are predominantly used for cooling and refrigeration. Although they do not damage the ozone layer like other banned refrigerants, their impact on global warming can be up to thousands of times greater th...

A greenhouse gas 24,000 times more powerful than carbon dioxide is being driven up by China’s growing electricity needs, according to a new study. CO2 is the number one greenhouse gas on our radar for good reason. A gas naturally present in the atmosphere but turbocharged by humans’ fossil fuel combustion, it is the single biggest contributor to the climate crisis. But an overload of carbon isn’t the only gas threatening Earth’s climate; international agreements cover a number of other gases including a man-made grouping of fluorinated (F) gases. Sulphur hexafluoride (SF6) falls within this po...
