The wind gusting across north German farm country brings much to the village of Sprakebuell: fog and rain from the sea, the occasional migrating stork, and the faint smell of manure in the newly fertilised fields. And perhaps best of all, money - from selling the electricity generated by the wind turbines studding the flat green fields stretching out to the North Sea. A slice of the cash goes to the villagers themselves, with the local buy-in making this windy farming enclave near the border with Denmark a showcase for ways to push ahead with renewable energy projects. It's not easy when headw...

A huge sand battery is set to slash the carbon emissions of a Finnish town. The industrial-scale storage unit in Pornainen, southern Finland, will be the world’s biggest sand battery when it comes online within a couple of years. Capable of storing 100 MWh of thermal energy from solar and wind sources, it will enable residents to eliminate oil from their district heating network, helping to cut emissions by nearly 70 per cent. "It's exciting to build a large-scale thermal energy storage, which will also act as a primary production plant in Pornainen's district heating network,” says Liisa Nask...

Wind power and heat pumps are obvious assets in the fight against fossil-fuelled climate change. But have you ever considered how well the two might work together? A new report from UK climate action charity Possible has done exactly that - and found they’re not only a match, but one capable of cutting energy bills by a third. With 3,700 of the most deprived neighbourhoods in England located within 1km of onshore wind resources, there’s big potential for alleviating fuel poverty while tackling emissions. “Replacing gas boilers with clean home heating will be vital to protect the climate. At th...

In its effort to reduce carbon emissions, the European Union has set ambitious targets for 2030, and renewable energy sources are key to meeting these objectives. In 2022, the European Commission raised its target of having at least 32% of renewables in its energy production by 2030 to a minimum of 42.5%, intending to ultimately achieve 45%. But while the EU’s renewable energy capacity has been growing consistently - even surpassing the goal to reach 20% by 2020 - the bloc still has a long road ahead. According to the latest data available, the current share of renewables in Europe’s energy pr...

The winners of the “Nobel prize of engineering” have been announced - and they are two European pioneers of wind energy. Danish Henrik Stiesdal and British Andrew Garrad - often referred to as the ‘Godfathers of wind’ - share this year’s Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering, as a recognition of their critical contributions to the development of wind power. Judges said their innovations had "enabled wind energy to fulfil a crucial role in today's electricity generation mix". A report released today showed that more of Europe’s energy came from wind power than fossil gas for the first time ever...

More of Europe’s electricity came from wind power than fossil gas for the first time ever last year. That’s according to the latest annual review from clean energy think tank Ember, which is peppered with positive statistics about the EU’s energy transition. Wind and solar produced a record 27 per cent of the bloc’s electricity in 2023 - above a quarter for the first time. Coal and gas took a corresponding nosedive, with the former falling to its lowest ever level at just 12 per cent of the EU’s electricity generation. “The EU’s power sector is in the middle of a monumental shift,” says Sarah ...

January saw scientists confirm that 2023 was the hottest year on record with high temperatures putting 1.5°C global warming limits at risk. Within Europe, Switzerland is particularly vulnerable to climate change. Over the last decade, temperatures have on average been 2.5°C warmer than they were in pre-industrial times. Its glaciers have experienced record melting with 10 per cent lost in the last two years. Weather extremes have swung from heavy downpours to lingering drought. Climate change was one of the issues at the top of the list for discussion during the recent World Economic Forum mee...

Renewable power sources generated enough energy to meet 100 per cent of Scotland’s electricity demand in 2022, recently released government data shows. Green energy such as wind and hydro generated the equivalent of 113 per cent of Scotland’s gross electricity consumption. This was 26 per cent more than in 2021. Scotland’s Energy Secretary Neil Gray hailed the news as a “significant milestone” for the country’s renewables sector. Scotland generates over 100 per cent of electricity from renewablesData from the Scottish Government shows that green power sources produced more than enough electric...
