Companies would be largely free to rely on carbon offsetting to back up their claims to be climate friendly, under a leaked draft inter-governmental position on a European anti-greenwashing directive, sparking criticism that one set of standards might apply to companies and another to the products and services they sell. In an updated compromise text, dated 22 May and seen by Euronews, Belgium has made what may be its final attempt to forge an inter-governmental position on a proposed Green Claims Directive before it hands over the rotating presidency of the EU Council to Hungary in July. Europe’s biggest pork producer has admitted that a claim its meat is “more climate-friendly than you think” violated marketing law. Danish Crown was ruled to have misled consumers by Denmark’s high court last month, in a case brought by two NGOs that marked the country’s first climate lawsuit. Campaigners from the Vegetarian Society of Denmark and the Climate Movement Association enjoyed partial success on 1 March. The Western High Court agreed the company should not have put stickers on its packaging declaring its pigs were “climate controlled”. But the court rejected the NGOs’ second claim t...

Lawmakers backed tougher rules to punish greenwashing companies claiming to be “eco-friendly” or “less polluting”, after a vote in the European Parliament in Strasbourg today (March 12). The report adopted in plenary today was prepared by the internal market and environment committees, building on the EU executive’s proposal for a Directive on Green Claims tabled in March last year, and established that non-compliant companies may face penalties, including temporary bars from public procurement tenders and fines worth at least 4% of annual revenue. Companies will be obliged to submit their gre...
