It is postseason time for the Iowa Baseball team. The Hawkeyes will head off to Omaha for the Big Ten Tournament this week, which has been yearly occurence under head coach Rick Heller. Prior to his arrival, Iowa had qualified for the tournament just once in six seasons, but they are eight for eight under Heller, including winning the tournament title in 2017. This season, the Hawkeyes will be looking for some of that 2017 magic, as they need to win the whole thing Omaha to earn a spot in the NCAA Tournament. Iowa finished the regular season with a 31-21 overall record and finished in a tie fo...

Although the Hawkeyes final regular season series against Florida International had nearly no meaning on paper, it was imperative that they put together a good weekend prior to the Big Ten Tournament. The results of the series were not going to change the fact that they have to win the whole thing in Omaha to earn a spot in the NCAA Tournament. That being said, it’s much easier to arrive in Omaha with a hopeful attitude after a successful weekend and that’s exactly what Rick Heller’s Hawkeyes will do. After an impressive offensive night on Friday, Iowa kept the bats going on Saturday afternoon...

Kris Bryant, Kyle Schwarber and Anthony Rizzo all made stops in Des Moines to play for the Iowa Cubs at some point in their major league careers. On Friday night at Principal Park, it felt like those powerful bats were back in the ballpark playing for the Iowa Baseball team. The Hawkeyes started their onslaught with eight runs in the first inning and rolled to a 15-2, run-rule victory over Florida International to tie the series at a game apiece. “The guys were dialed in and I think after last night, that one stung a little bit,” said head coach Rick Heller. “The focus was definitely there and...

For a moment, it looked like Iowa was going to pull off a ninth inning rally to walk it off in front of the fans at Principal Park. Bases loaded, two outs, winning run on second base, with Raider Tello at the plate. The crowd of over 4,000 fans came to their feet, urging Tello to come up with a clutch hit. Instead, FIU reliever Ryan Carbacas came up with a strikeout to end the game. It just wasn’t the Hawkeyes night, a sentiment that has been shared far too often this season. “Really tough loss. Really tough to stomach one like that,” said head coach Rick Heller. “It just wasn’t to be, so we h...

June 1, Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese will square off for the first time in the WNBA. Initially, the game between Clark’s Indiana Fever and Reese’s Chicago Sky would be on NBA TV, meaning ESPN missed out on the rematch between the former Iowa and LSU stars. That is no longer the case. The game is moving from NBA TV to ESPN, tipping off at noon ET. That means ESPN will get to show the first professional showdown between Clark and Reese after two high-profile matchups in the NCAA Tournament. Given the viewership surge the duo helped build at the college level, it could turn into a major win for ...

Over the years, Jan Jensen has probably turned down at least a dozen head coaching opportunities at that college level. She stayed at Iowa and one day hoped that she would land her dream job. On Monday that dream became reality as the long time assistant to Lisa Bluder was named her successor. She discusses taking over as Iowa head coach and landing her dream job in coaching. JAN JENSEN OPENING STATEMENT Thank you so much. Thanks for everybody being here and for always covering our program. I really appreciate it. It’s a day, that’s for sure. First off, I want to thank Beth. That was such a lo...

The Iowa basketball program came into the transfer portal cycle of recruiting with two objectives. One was to land a point guard and they accomplished that last month. They were also looking to add a front court player and did just that with the addition of forward Seydou Traore, who was previously at Manhattan. Traore is a 6-foot-7 forward who is originally from New York and just wrapped up his first year of basketball at the college level. In his freshman year, Traore averaged 11.8 points and 8.2 rebounds, along with averaging 1.3 blocks and shot 43.3% from the floor. If there is one knock i...

Wednesday night was the highly-anticipated regular season debut for Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever. From an atmosphere standpoint, it wasn’t anything that Caitlin isn’t used to. It was a near capacity crowd at Mohegan Sun arena and it was the first time the Sun have sold out a home opener since 2003. As for the play on the court, it was a rocky start for the Fever, as they fell to Connecticut 92-71. Caitlin Clark finished with a team-high 20 points on 5/15 shooting, including four made threes. Things did not go well in the passing department, as she totaled just three assists to ten turno...
