When Kate Martin was selected by the Las Vegas Aces with the 18th pick in the draft back in April, she was just grateful to get an opportunity with the back-to-back league champs. Fast forward to Monday night and she heard her name called by the public address announcer at Crypto.com Arena as starter for the Aces. With Jackie Young out of the lineup due to an illness, the former Hawkeye was able to make her first career start. If you want an idea of how well liked Kate is across the country, it was a road game, 1,900 miles from her home town and in a state she had never visited. Still, Kate re...

The Iowa Women’s Basketball team delivered some tough news on Friday morning, announcing that former top 100 recruit Ava Jones will take a medical disqualification and retire from college basketball. Jones will remain on scholarship and continue to work toward her degree at the University of Iowa. “We wish Ava the best on the road to recovery and fully support the decision she made to step away from the game,” Head Coach Jan Jensen said. “She worked tirelessly to get to this point, but she made the best decision for herself and her well-being.” Statement from Ava Jones I would like to start by...

The last thing the world needs right now is another middle-aged, white man from Iowa weighing in on Caitlin Clark’s bumpy rookie reception in the WNBA. But guess what? You’re getting one! In my defense, I’ve written about Iowa athletes for two decades on Hawkeye Report, so I have more bona fides than many of my pasty Midwestern bros, er, brethren. My typing fingers may be as Cheeto-stained as any other angry internet commenter, but I at least have some perspective. The Clark phenomenon has sparked much racial animus, misogyny, apologies, non-apologies and vitriol across what feels like every c...

If it doesn’t feel like it’s been very long since Caitlin Clark and Kate Martin were playing for Iowa at the Final Four, it’s because it hasn’t been long. In fact, the Hawkeyes faced off against South Carolina in the national title game just 50 days ago. Not even two months later and the two former teammates squared off against each other for the first time as pros. On Saturday, Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever traveled to Las Vegas to face off against Kate Martin, Megan Gustafson and the Aces. The Aces picked up the 99-80 victory, but that isn’t the only game those three former Hawkeyes ha...

Kris Bryant, Kyle Schwarber and Anthony Rizzo all made stops in Des Moines to play for the Iowa Cubs at some point in their major league careers. On Friday night at Principal Park, it felt like those powerful bats were back in the ballpark playing for the Iowa Baseball team. The Hawkeyes started their onslaught with eight runs in the first inning and rolled to a 15-2, run-rule victory over Florida International to tie the series at a game apiece. “The guys were dialed in and I think after last night, that one stung a little bit,” said head coach Rick Heller. “The focus was definitely there and...
