The European Union has voted in favour of ratifying the High Seas Treaty. This treaty aims to protect marine life in areas that are outside of countries’ maritime borders including the high seas and the seabed. The decision is a key step in the process of approving the ratification of the High Seas Treaty. The Parliament’s decision will now be formally adopted by the European Council, after which the EU will be ready to deposit its “instrument of ratification” at the United Nations (UN). Governments aren’t doing enough to protect the world’s oceans and need to make major commitments at an important conference taking place in Athens, Greece, this week, according to Greenpeace. Messages like “Our Ocean is Not for Sale”, “Ratify the Global Ocean Treaty” and “Stop Deep Sea Mining” were projected at sites around the city including the iconic Acropolis Hill and under the Temple of Poseidon, in Cape Sounio. They were also projected onto the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre where governments will meet this week for a major conference on the challenges our oceans are facing....
