The event, first celebrated in 1911, traces its roots to the early struggles for equal pay and votes for women. On Women's Day in Italy, a nationwide general strike for women's rights is underway, organised by most trade unions across the political spectrum. Sectors such as schools, healthcare, and other industries are participating in the strike, with minor disruptions reported in regional train services, while long-distance transport remains operational. In major Italian cities including Rome and Milan, marches organised by unions and women's associations advocate for equal treatment of male...

Founded in 2021, Vyld’s tampon named "Kelpon" is made from a biopolymer extracted from marine algae. This biopolymer is processed into fibres which are then produced in the same way as the traditional tampons. Vyld tests the quality of the tampon using a Syngina, a device that tests the absorption capacity of tampons. Ireland is set to consider two referendums today: one about women’s role in the home and the other seeking to redefine the contours of family in modern Irish society. These referendums have generated a lot of questioning and a desire to remove the gendered language of the ‘women in the home’ reference. In the wake of landmark decisions such as the 1995 vote to abolish the divorce ban and subsequent referendums on same-sex marriage (2015) and abortion (2018), the Irish public is being asked to vote YES or NO over the wording of the new article and the impact it will have on Irish women’s rights...

The gender pay gap is a significant stumbling block on the road towards a fairer world. Despite major advances towards equality, European women are still earning 13% less than men doing the same job. Wage disparities have a number of underlying causes, but one such driver can be called 'the confidence gap'. According to a recent study by employment site Indeed, only 43% of women globally have ever asked for a higher salary during their careers. This is despite over half (56%) not believing that they are paid enough in their current positions. "Sadly, women are typically less comfortable than m...

Her home destroyed, she and her child sought temporary shelter along with several other women from her community. “Our husbands left to take the livestock to high areas where floods would not hit,” she recalls. “Only women remained…. This led to an increase in rape cases for young girls and women”. With the floods preventing access to hospitals, o...

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women and alcohol consumption is a major risk factor for it. Yet there’s a lack of awareness about that risk, the World Health Organization (WHO)’s European office warned on International Women's Day. "It’s high time for everyone to acknowledge that alcohol is a major risk factor for breast cancer," said Dr Hans Kluge, WHO Regional Director for Europe. “International Women’s Day is a unique opportunity to remind ourselves of alcohol’s link, not just to breast cancer, but indeed all cancers”. Research shows that there is no “safe” amount of alcoholi...
