Days before the premiere of his new film The Seed of the Sacred Fig in Competition at the Cannes Film Festival, acclaimed Iranian director Mohammad Rasoulof has been sentenced to eight years in prison and flogging in Iran for national security crimes. He’ll also be subjected to a fine and the confiscation of property. In a statement on X, Rasoulof’s lawyer Babak Paknia said the court found Rasoulof’s films and documentaries to be “examples of collusion with the intention of committing a crime against the security of the country.” The filmmaker, 52, has been a target of the authoritarian regime...

Iran and the United Nations' nuclear watchdog are still negotiating over how to implement a deal struck last year to expand inspections of the Islamic Republic's rapidly advancing atomic program, officials said on Tuesday. The acknowledgement by the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Mariano Grossi, shows the challenges his inspectors face, years after the collapse of Tehran's nuclear deal with world powers and the wider tensions gripping the Middle East in light of the ongoing Israel-Hamas war. Grossi has previously warned that Tehran has enriched uranium close to w...

The UN nuclear watchdog chief Rafael Grossi is in Iran seeking tougher checks on the country's nuclear programme. The IAEA faces increasing difficulty in monitoring the Islamic Republic's rapidly advancing nuclear programme, exacerbated by tensions across the wider Middle East over the Israel-Hamas war. Grossi has already warned that Tehran has enough uranium enriched to near-weapons-grade levels to make "several" nuclear bombs. He has acknowledged the agency can't guarantee that none of Iran's centrifuges may have been peeled away for secret enrichment. But the head of Iran's atomic energy or...

Iranian authorities have interrogated the producers of Mohammad Rasoulof's new film, The Seed of the Sacred Fig, following its selection in Competition for this year’s Cannes Film Festival. They were interrogated and subsequently prohibited from leaving the country. Lawyer Babak Paknia confirmed the news on X, stating that the film crew, after enduring hours of interrogation, were pressured to convince the director to withdraw the film from the Cannes line-up. Paknia added that it was not clear if Rasoulof would be allowed to leave Iran to attend the festival. "1/3 Some of the production agent...

Dissident rapper Toomaj Salehi has been given a death sentence for his involvement in the widespread protests that swept Iran in 2022. “An order for the execution of Toomaj Salehi has been issued,” Salehi’s lawyer Amir Raesian stated. The rapper has been detained, held in solitary confinement and was allegedly tortured following his arrest. In an unprecedented move, a court in Isfahan reversed the higher Supreme Court’s decision on Saleh’s case last week, upholding the original verdict of “corruption on earth” and issued the maximum punishment of death, according to Iranian pro-reform outlets ...

The tit-for-tat air strikes between the Israeli defence forces and the Iranian army has reached new heights. Despite calls for moderation from G7 leaders it appears that Iran and Israel have shifted from a proxy war to direct confrontation in their respective territories. Iran has been warned of new sanctions. Meanwhile, an apparent Israeli drone attack on Iran saw troops fire air defences at a major air base and nuclear site near the central city of Isfahan. The base allegedly suffered no damage. It came days after Tehran's attack on Israel. Several countries have voiced concern over the pote...

The European Union's Home Affairs Commissioner has made an appeal for the release of a Swedish employee of the EU's diplomatic corps who was arrested in Iran two years ago. Sweden says that 33-year-old Johan Floderus, who worked for the EU’s External Action Service, was arbitrarily detained. Home Affairs Commissioner Ylva Johansson said Floderus had asked to work for the EU delegation in Afghanistan before he was detained in Iran. “We are dedicated to Johan's case," she said at an event in Brussels. "We are working closely with the Swedish authorities. We condemn Johan's imprisonment and deman...

But the agenda is set to be overshadowed by the ongoing crisis in the Middle East, which the West fears could soon spiral out of control and turn into a wider regional conflict. The concerns have been simmering since the start of the Israel-Hamas war and escalated dramatically after an Israeli airstrike hit the Iranian consulate in Damascus, killing seven members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards. In retaliation, Teheran launched its first-ever attack on Israeli soil with 300 drones, ballistic and cruise missiles, the vast majority of which were intercepted by Israel. The barrage opened a ne...

Iran's first direct military confrontation with Israel on Saturday did not come as a surprise to some. Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei himself warned Israel would "be slapped", following a suspected Israeli airstrike on an Iranian consular building in Syria earlier this month. Still, the fallout from the strike - which saw Tehran launch more than 300 drones, ballistic and cruise missiles at Israel - is no less concerning for the Iranian population. While state media depict mass celebrations among the people, a significant portion of the population is deeply concerned about the ec...
