Students in Paris - inspired by Gaza solidarity encampments at campuses in the United States - blocked access to a campus building at a prestigious French university on Friday. The pro-Palestinian protest at the Paris Institute of Political Studies, known as Sciences Po, prompted administrators to move all classes online. It came two days after police broke up a separate demonstration at the university’s amphitheatre outside one of its Paris campuses. On Friday, scores of protesters occupied a central campus building and dozens of others blocked its entrance with trash cans, wooden platforms a...

More than 281 million people in 59 countries experienced high levels of food insecurity, requiring urgent assistance, according to a UN report. The Global Report on Food Crises released on Wednesday found that war-torn Gaza was the territory with the largest number of people facing famine. There were 24 million more people facing an acute lack of food than in 2022, the report said. This was due to the sharp deterioration in food security, especially in the Gaza Strip and Sudan. Máximo Torero, chief economist for the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization, said 705,000 people in five countries ...

Israel says it is “moving ahead” with plans to launch a full-scale ground offensive on the southern Gazan city of Rafah. Government spokesperson David Mencer said the target is four Hamas battalions reportedly based in the city, warning “they cannot be shielded from Israel.” The Israeli government previously declared Rafah a safe zone and more than half of Gaza’s population of 2.3 million sought shelter there. The report's authors write that the US, Russia and China together have led a global disregard for international rules and values enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, with civilians in co...

This happens as the US House of Representatives has approved $26.4 billion in aid to Israel, as part of a wider package on foreign aid which still needs to pass the Senate.

Over the weekend, an Israeli airstrike targeted a house in Rafah, Gaza's southernmost city, killing nine people, including six children, according to hospital authorities. The conflict between Israel and the Islamic militant group Hamas has drastically risen tensions in the Middle East, particularly in recent weeks in particular escalations involving Israel and Iran. However, the recent strike has brought attention once again on Rafah, which is home to more than half of Gaza's population of approximately 2.3 million, many of whom have been displaced by conflict elsewhere. The strike, which hap...
