Israeli shelling and airstrikes killed at least 37 people, most of them sheltering in tents, outside the southern Gaza city of Rafah overnight on Tuesday. The attacks targeted the same area where strikes triggered a deadly fire days earlier in a camp for displaced Palestinians, according to witnesses, emergency workers and hospital officials. The fire at the tent camp has drawn widespread international outrage, including from some of Israel’s closest allies. The Israeli military suggested Sunday's blaze in the tent camp may have been caused by secondary explosions, possibly from Palestinian mi...

It is almost impossible to provide any humanitarian aid in Gaza following the Israeli offensive on the southern city of Rafah, the director for Europe of the UN Agency for Palestinian Refugees told Euronews. Some 1.4 million people sought refuge near Rafah when the Israeli offensive started more than seven months ago, in Northern Gaza. But the United Nations Palestinian Refugee Agency (UNRWA) now classifies the “safe zones” designated by Israel as “no man’s land”. The agency's director for Europe, Marta Lorenzo, told Euronews that she fears for the 800,000 people who are on the move again afte...

European Council President Charles Michel is “in favour of the recognition of Palestine” and calls for a coordinated approach among EU and third countries to bring about concrete progress on the matter, he told Euronews in an exclusive interview. Michel's comments on Monday to EU Senior Correspondent Maïa De La Baume came on the eve of Spain, Ireland and Norway formally recognising a state of Palestine, seven months after the Gaza war broke out. Asked whether other countries should recognise the Middle Eastern state, Michel said that the move should be used “as a leverage to make some progress...

In today's world, marked by extraordinary geopolitical turbulence and persistent conflict, the need for multilateral solutions has never been more urgent. Wars in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa are claiming the lives of hundreds of thousands, whilst climate change is leaving millions more hungry, vulnerable, and displaced. These conflicts appear beyond resolution, with no hope in sight. Amidst this global discord, the traditional powerhouses — the world’s economic and political behemoths — are increasingly unable to work together. The conflict in Ukraine has created a diplomatic stalemate...

European Union foreign ministers unanimously agreed on Monday to call for an Association Council with Israel to discuss the country's compliance with its human rights obligations under the EU-Israel trade deal, also known as the Association Agreement. The bloc also intends to use the meeting to confront Netanyahu's government about its compliance with Friday's ruling by the International Court of Justice (ICJ), which ordered Israel to halt its intended military offensive in the city of Rafah. The move comes three months after Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and the then Taoiseach Leo Vara...

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has acknowledged there was a “tragic mistake” after an Israeli strike killed dozens of people in the southern Gaza city of Rafah. In a speech before parliament on Monday, he said Israel was investigating the strike that occurred the night before. Israel has faced new condemnation for the devastating airstrike that Gaza health officials said killed at least 45 Palestinians, including displaced people living in tents who were burnt alive. Even some of Israel's closest allies, particularly the United States, have expressed outrage at mounting civilian dea...

Israeli airstrikes killed at least 35 people on Sunday and hit tents for displaced people in the southern Gaza city of Rafah, and numerous others were trapped in flaming debris, Palestinian health workers said. According to Gaza's Health Ministry, women and children made up most of the dead and dozens of wounded. The attacks came two days after the International Court of Justice ordered Israel to end its military offensive in Rafah, where more than half of Gaza's 2.3 million population had sought shelter before Israel's incursion earlier this month. Tens of thousands of people remain in the ar...

Sirens sounded across central Israel, including in Tel Aviv, for the first time in months on Sunday, as Hamas claimed to have fired a barrage of rockets from Gaza. The militants have continued to fire projectiles at communities around Gaza more than seven months into the war but have not fired longer-range rockets in months. There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage from the latest barrage. Earlier on Sunday, aid trucks entered Gaza from southern Israel through a new agreement to bypass the Rafah crossing with Egypt after Israeli forces seized the Palestinian side of it earlier t...

Scuffles broke out between Israeli police and protesters in Tel Aviv on Saturday. Thousands gathered to demand the government secure the release of hostages held by Hamas in Gaza, keeping up months-long street demonstrations. Demonstrators carried photos of female soldiers abducted by Palestinian militants during the surprise 7 October attack on southern Israel. Protesters also called for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s resignation and new elections, holding banners that read "stop the war". “We saw the video, we couldn’t stay at home after the government abandoned all these people,” said ...

Italy has pledged millions of euros to support Palestine, during a meeting of Italy's prime minister Giorgia Meloni and Palestinian prime minister Mohammad Mustafa on Saturday in Rome.
