Florence (Italy) (AFP) - An Italian court on Wednesday reconvicted Amanda Knox of slander for accusing an innocent man of killing her British roommate in 2007, a murder she herself was jailed for before being acquitted. The American wiped away tears in court in Florence after she was sentenced to three years already served for having accused, during police questioning, a Congolese bar owner of murdering 21-year-old Meredith Kercher. "Amanda is very upset at the outcome of this hearing, she was looking to" draw a line under the saga "after 17 years of judicial procedure," her lawyer Carlo Dall...

The Italian town of Monfalcone is dealing with a spike in friction — and media attention — caused by the political positions of the city's far-right Lega party mayor regarding a high number of legal residents of foreign background. Right before the European vote scheduled for 8 and 9 June in Italy, the debate reached its peak in the northern municipality with just over 30,000 inhabitants. Monfalcone, in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region, has become one of Italy's municipalities with the greatest concentration of foreigner-born residents, comprising around a third of the population. More than 5,...

A Dutch tourist has been accused of defacing a wall in an ancient Roman villa in Herculaneum, an ancient city that was buried under lava along with Pompeii in 79 AD. He has been charged with damage and defacement of artistic works. The 27-year-old man tagged the wall with his graffiti signature using a black marker, according to Italian police. Reports state that the tourist was apprehended shortly after staff at the archaeological site discovered the graffiti. “Any damage hurts our heritage, our beauty, and our identity, and that is why it must be punished with the utmost firmness,” Culture M...

It wasn’t Elly Schlein’s last rally, like in the case of Italian PM Giorgia Meloni who closed the electoral campaign on Saturday, but the two events have something in common: both squares weren’t as full as planned. Whether or not that’s an indication of voters’ interest in either Schlein's Democratic Party (PD)or the Meloni's Brother's Italy party (FDI) is yet to be seen. But it’s clear that the two gatherings that took place in the Italian capital didn’t attract as much audience as expected. The leader of the Democratic Party already appeared in Milan the previous day to address a much large...

It was still dark and quiet outside when Ousmane Sylla had his last prayer in the courtyard of an Italian migrant jail. A few moments later, the silence of dawn was shattered. Chaos took over the detention and deportation centre of Ponte Galeria on the outskirts of Rome. The 21-year-old Guinean had been found dead in an apparent suicide. Fellow detainees who discovered his body screamed for help and frantically tried to resuscitate him. When paramedics finally arrived, Sylla was gone. Enraged by his death, migrants set mattresses on fire, broke down doors and threw stones at security forces in...
