The Irish government has said it is planning to enact legislation by the end of May that would allow it to resume sending asylum seekers who arrive over the border with Northern Ireland back to the United Kingdom. Justice Minister Helen McEntee said the emergency legislation would allow for faster processing of migrants. “This has never been a panacea when we talk about returns, the most effective way that we can have an immigration system that's firm but fair is a fast processing system and what this means is that people's applications are turned around much more quickly,” she said. Ireland’s...

Video footage has surfaced showing French police employing what has been labelled as "aggressive tactics" in attempts to deter migrant boats from crossing the English Channel. The footage, obtained and released by Lighthouse Reports in collaboration with Le Monde, Der Spiegel and The Observer, shows various cases of heavy-handed, potentially dangerous, tactics used by authorities in France. In one video, a police boat encircles a dinghy carrying individuals wearing life jackets, creating waves as it manoeuvres. Passengers of the dingy are then filmed struggling to remove water flooding their b...

A dramatic night-time rescue by a non-profit ship in the Mediterranean saved dozens of people after a boat capsized off the coast of North Africa. The packed boat was riding low in the water as the crew from the 'Geo Barents' ship approached. The rescue team managed to distribute lifejackets and began taking people aboard rescue dinghies when their fibreglass boat flipped over leaving 45 people in the water. Geo Barents managed to rescue all 75 people that night and saved 249 people over the course of the weekend in three rescue missions. On X, Medicines Sans Frontiers said the rescued people ...

Last month, a report documented vicious punishment beatings of people held in Greek refugee camps and detention centres. Most who spoke to the Border Violence Monitoring Network (BVMN) reported having been beaten indiscriminately. Others said they were beaten for daring to complain about inhumane conditions in Greece’s EU-funded detention camps. Respondents also reported being shocked with electric weapons and subjected to racist abuse. Such violence should make headlines across the continent. Instead, we have normalised it. The week the report emerged, the European Court of Human Rights censu...

Albania's Parliament on Thursday approved a deal for the country to hold thousands of migrants rescued in international waters by Italy while their asylum applications are processed, despite protests from opposition lawmakers and human rights groups. Under the five-year deal, Albania would shelter up to 3,000 migrants at any one time. With asylum requests expected to take around a month to process, the number of asylum-seekers sent to Albania could reach up to 36,000 in a year. The agreement, signed in November between Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni,...

Tunisia's coast guard retrieved the bodies of nine people who died after their boat sank on Thursday, marking the latest disaster for migrants trying to cross the Mediterranean Sea to Europe. The coast guard also retrieved 45 people from the boat after it started to fill with water around six kilometres off the coast of Zarzis, a common departure point near Tunisia's border with Libya. Coast guard spokesman Houssameddine Jbabli said the boat, which was carrying non-Tunisian passengers, likely embarked from Libya. He added that survivors were transported to a local hospital in Tunisia. Several ...

In the Italian city of Trieste, up to 400 people shelter each day in a crumbling, abandoned building next to the train station. This is not out of choice. With an average wait of 70 days before asylum seekers can access formal reception facilities, they have nowhere else to go. And while the International Rescue Committee (IRC) and other NGOs work tirelessly to provide food, water, information and legal advice, it’s simply not enough to match the soaring level of needs. It’s clear that EU member states like Italy need to urgently invest in their reception systems, ensuring these are part of a ...

As the Orchestra of the Sea debuted at Milan's famed Teatro alla Scala, the violins, violas and cellos carried tales of desperation and redemption. Inmates from Milan's largest prison have been bending, chiseling and gouging the wood from battered boats used by human smugglers to bring migrants to Italy – transforming them into instruments. The project, dubbed Metamorphosis, focuses on transforming what otherwise might be discarded into something of value to society: rotten wood into fine instruments, inmates into craftsmen, all under the principle of rehabilitation. Two inmates were granted l...
