Giorgia Meloni is officially a candidate in the European elections next June. From the stage of the programmatic conference of her party, Brothers of Italy, in Pescara, the Prime Minister announced that she will run. On stage, Meloni recalled the previous European electoral challenges, of 2014 when the party did not reach the quorum of 4 percent and those of 2019 when it reached 6.5 percent. "In six years we have increased by two percent, in the last three we have reached 26.5 percent," said Meloni. "I don't remember this story as a rhetorical exercise of self-satisfaction and self-celebration...

The Vatican chose to stage its pavilion inside Venice’s women’s prison, and through a deal with the Italian Justice Ministry, invited inmates to work alongside the artists. The result is a multimedia exhibit “With My Eyes,” that is open to the public by reservation only and under strict security conditions. The Vatican exhibit has turned the convent-prison into one of the must-see attractions of this year’s Biennale, an unusual art world darling that greets visitors at the entrance with Maurizio Cattelan’s wall mural of two giant filthy feet. The work, titled “Father,” recalls Caravaggio’s dir...

Venice residents have rallied against a day-tripper fee for visitors, implemented to combat excess tourism. Protesters argue that the fee turns the famous city into a 'theme park' and that it won't address the real issues they face. Hundreds of Venetians marched though the city's main bus terminal holding banners reading “No to Tickets, Yes to Services and Housing”. Protesters scuffled briefly with police with riot gear who blocked them from entering the city, before changing course and entering over another bridge escorted by plainclothes police officers. The demonstration eventually wrapped ...

Italy on Thursday marked the 79th anniversary of its liberation from Nazi occupation and fascist rule with a public holiday and commemorations across the country. On April 25, 1945, Italian partisans launched a massive uprising against the fascist regime and Nazi occupation in Milan and Turin, which marked the start of their retreat from Italy. Premier Giorgia Meloni, whose Brothers of Italy party traces its roots to the neo-fascist movement that emerged after the fall of dictator Benito Mussolini, joined the Italian president at the tomb of the unknown soldier in Rome for the solemn Liberatio...

Visitors to Venice who fail to pay the entry fee to the historic city centre will face fines starting at 10 times the €5 ticket price. Starting this year, tourists will have to pay to enter the lagoon city, a move authorities have introduced to clamp down on overtourism. The charge will be in place on 29 days between April and mid-July. “We need to find a balance, a new balance between the tourists and residents,” said the municipal councillor for tourism, Simone Venturini. “We need to safeguard the spaces of the resident, of course, and we need to discourage the arrival of day trippers on par...

Britain’s Home Secretary James Cleverly has said the government is doing all it can to stop dangerous small boat crossings, after news that five migrants had died in an attempt to cross the English Channel. Cleverly is in Rome to discuss ways to accelerate joint work to stem illegal migration from North Africa. His visit comes a day after the UK parliament passed the controversial Safety of Rwanda Bill, which will see some illegal migrants in the UK sent to the central African country. “This vital legislation means we can now proceed with our Rwanda plan and begin removing people with no right...

Italy’s Senate has passed legislation which allows regions to permit groups “with a qualified experience supporting motherhood” to have access to women considering abortions at public clinics. For the right-wing government, the amendment fulfils the original intent of the 1978 law legalising abortion, known as Law 194, which includes provisions to prevent the procedure and support motherhood. But some in the medical profession have questioned the wisdom of allowing medically unqualified, anti-abortion groups access to women considering the procedure. “Then you don't understand how you want to ...

The Italian city of Milan is proposing a new law to ban ice cream after midnight, in an effort to protect the "peace and health" of residents. A legislative starting paper has been filed by the city's local government. If passed, the new law could come into effect next month and last until November – something which local vendors will not be best pleased about, considering they are accustomed to selling gelato late at night as part of Italian culture. The proposal would ban all takeaway food, including pizza and drinks, after 12.30am on weekdays and 1.30am on weekends and public holidays - all...

Protests have erupted in Rome after the lower house of Italy's parliament passed new legislation allowing anti-abortion activists to enter abortion clinics. The measure, passed by Meloni's far-right Brothers of Italy party, is part of a package of initiatives that are funded by the European Union's post-Covid recovery fund, and is supposedly an attempt at “involving non-profits with experience providing maternity support in family planning clinics”. The amendment was approved by the lower house last Thursday by a margin of 140 votes to 91, and will be voted on by the Italian Senate. Prime Mini...
