Bloomington (United States) (AFP) - Linguistics experts are turning to cutting-edge technologies to revitalize threatened Native American languages -- and rejuvenate generations of Indigenous tradition -- through new approaches such as children's books and smartphone apps. In one such endeavor, three Native American women rack their brains as they gather around a computer, trying to remember -- and record -- dozens of Apache language words related to everyday activities such as cooking and eating. They are creating an online English-Apache dictionary, just one of several projects working to pr...

Paris (AFP) - Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris is being sued by French language purists for only translating its signs into English. The group has already succeeded in forcing the Eiffel Tower to add Spanish to its information signs alongside English and French. The Association for the Defence of the French Language claims that only translating signs into English helps increase the international dominance of that language. It has French law on its side -- an oft-ignored 1994 regulation requires all public buildings to translate all their signs and information into at least two languages. The a...

Washington (AFP) - The break-in 50 years ago by Republican operatives at a Washington office led to the historic resignation of US president Richard Nixon -- but arguably it reverberated more deeply around the world with the coining of a single term: Watergate. Ever since the Potomac riverside building lent its name to one of Washington's greatest political crimes, -gate has become the signifier of choice for scandals worldwide -- a fact not lost on British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, nearly undone just this year by his own Partygate. Over the past five decades there have been more than 200 ...

Washington (AFP) - "English is not my first language," writes Nakia Smith on her TikTok account, although the 22-year-old grew up in Texas. The young African American woman has been deaf since birth, and uses her large online following to promote her little-known dialect: Black American Sign Language. In her video clips, she tells her 400,000 followers about the differences between her language and the standard American Sign Language (ASL). Among other things, she signs with two hands rather than one, uses more space and makes more use of facial expressions. Smith tells her followers that to ...

Paris (AFP) - Poet Amanda Gorman made her name with a call for unity within the United States, but the job of translating her work in Europe has sparked divisive debate. "To put our future first, we must first put our differences aside," the 23-year-old recited in her now-iconic performance at Joe Biden's presidential inauguration in January. But in Europe, it has been hard to ignore people's differences when it comes to translating that poem, "The Hill We Climb". The furore was kickstarted in the Netherlands when activist-journalist Janice Deul said it was "incomprehensible" that a person wi...
