Since Nebraska celebrates 100 years of football in Memorial Stadium today, it seemed good to take a few Husker fans with me on a trip down memory lane on a beautiful, breezy Saturday morning before the Big Red hosted Northwestern. The topic was a bit more subjective than usual, but it was appropriate. I asked fans tailgating in the parking lot just west of Hawks Field at Haymarket Park this question: “What is the Huskers’ biggest/most important home win during the past century?” As you might imagine, that question sparked a lot of conversation — so much, in fact, that I had to cut down my usua...

The Memorial Stadium renovation project is moving forward. The Nebraska Board of Regents unanimously approved the renovations after giving the OK for the initial contract at a meeting in April. Nebraska athletic director Trev Alberts spoke before the board Thursday, saying the proposal is not about today or tomorrow but the future. NU system president Ted Carter noted for the regents that shovels wouldn't meet dirt until money was raised from the fundraising effort. There will also be several opportunities in which Alberts will appear before the board over the next couple years. That will prov...

This fall, Nebraska will announce its plans for the modernization / renovation / revitalization of Memorial Stadium. Modernizing Memorial Stadium for its second century is a big undertaking that will have a dramatic impact in the short and long term. Some of the changes might be drastic – I’ve heard rumors of a demolition and complete rebuild of South stadium – while others might be more minor. But make no mistake: some improvements are necessary. Here is my wish list for what the Memorial Stadium Modernization project should – and should not – contain. Like most people considering a big home ...

Unprecedented success, and then unexpected change. That sums up Nebraska football during this 10-year span. It began with an embarrassment of riches, and Husker fans can recite the details by heart: 60 wins in five years against just three losses, three national championships, and a 1995 team that ranks among the best in college football history (off-the-field warts and all). Few saw it coming when coach Tom Osborne called it a career at the end of 1997 and handed Frank Solich the reins. Solich delivered far more ups than downs, but a 7-7 season in 2002 turned up the heat on the former Husker ...

The Huskers flirted with championships but soon found themselves overmatched by the nation’s top teams — and then went to work at correcting that This 10-year span began with a season that saw a high-octane Nebraska football team famously fall one play short of a national championship. It ended with Huskers pulling out of a slump in big games and striving to rejoin the ranks of college football’s truly elite. Sold-out games in Lincoln remained a given as Nebraska racked up wins at an 81.6 percent clip, including 90.8 percent at home. A pair of November home losses, however, were particularly c...

Tom Osborne took over Nebraska’s winning machine and kept it humming, but elite status proved elusive Nebraska football’s sixth decade in Memorial Stadium began with the passing of the coaching baton from a legend to a relative unknown. And a heavy baton it was. Bob Devaney’s two national championships had raised expectations to new levels. Many fans were unaware Tom Osborne was the architect of those title teams’ offenses. As far as they knew, he had been in charge of the offensive ends and little more. Would this low-key 35-year-old be up to the task? Most fan bases would say yes when a coac...
