Greek consumers are currently paying more than ever before for a litre of standard olive oil, with prices ranging between €12 and €15 ($12.88-$16.11). In March, prices had risen by 67.2% compared with the same month last year, according to the statistics authority Elstat on Wednesday. Olive oil, the golden lifeblood of Mediterranean cuisine, is experiencing a staggering rise in price, especially in the southern European countries where it is produced. The price of olive oil in Portugal soared by 69.1% in January 2024 compared to last year, well above the average of 50% in the EU, according to Eurostat. The average price of store-bought pizza and quiche in the EU in December 2023 was 5.9% higher than in December 2022, according to Eurostat. However, this indicates that the rate of price increase for both dishes slowed down in 2023 compared with December 2022 when prices were 15.9% higher than in December 2021.
