A bleak picture has emerged from a report published Friday by the EU crime agency. Europol has identified 821 particularly threatening criminal networks with more than 25,000 members across the bloc. A suspected drug trafficker and former associate of the late Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar has been arrested in Medellín following an international operation, Spanish police said on Saturday. Haiti's government said Thursday that it was extending a state of emergency and nighttime curfew to try and curb violent gang attacks that have paralysed the capital of Port-au-Prince in a fierce battle for political power.
