Travellers booking with budget airlines often see their arrival at a regional airport and extended journey to their destination as the price they have to pay for a low-cost fare. Fly with a low-cost carrier to Paris and you’ll probably land at Beauvais-Tillé Airport some 85 kilometres northwest of the capital. Book for Milan and you might arrive at Orio al Serio International Airport, closer to the city of Bergamo than to Italy’s fashion capital. But instead of viewing this as an inconvenience, consider using it as a way to explore some of Europe’s unsung cities. Wander canals and sip prosecco...

France’s president hosted China’s leader at a remote mountain pass in the Pyrenees on Tuesday for private meetings after Xi visited Paris, in a trip dominated by trade disputes and Russia’s war in Ukraine. French President Emmanuel Macron made a point of inviting Chinese President Xi Jinping to the Tourmalet Pass near the Spanish border, where Macron spent time as a child visiting his grandmother. The invitation was intended as a reciprocal gesture, after Xi took Macron to the residence of the governor of Guangdong province, where the Chinese president’s father once lived, last year. The windi...

Cyber security defenders are preparing for the upcoming Paris Olympic Games. The so-called cyberwarriors have studied and analysed potential hackers' strengths, tactics and weaknesses. Threats could be anyone from teenage show-offs and ransomware gangs to Russian military hackers with a track record of malicious cyberattacks that threaten to paralyse the IT systems vital for the sporting contest. But unlike the 10,500 Olympians who will converge on France’s capital in July, the cybersecurity engineers behind the Games hope to stay out the spotlight. For them, the equivalent of a medal will be ...

French police peacefully evacuated dozens of students on Friday from a building of the Paris Institute of Political Studies, known as Sciences Po. The students had gathered there in support of Palestinians, echoing similar encampments and solidarity demonstrations across the United States. The Sciences Po building had been occupied since Thursday evening. The university administration had c...

Officers converged on the camp just before dawn and urged the migrants to pack their tents and belongings, before directing them to a bus to be driven to a transit centre outside the city. Only two or three of them climbed aboard the bus. Most others walked away carrying their belongings. Police said the operation was carried out for security reasons, notably because the tent camp was near schools. The 100 or so men and boys from West Africa had been living in the makeshift camp in central Paris for several weeks. Paris-region officials told the migrants - many of them minors and in the proces...

Around 100 students have protested in support of Palestine near the prestigious Sorbonne University in Paris. Taking their cue from the university campus protest movement across the United States, students in Paris chanted slogans in support of Palestinians in Gaza amid Israel's continued offensive. "I'm inspired by the students in Columbia, in Harvard and in MIT that are very strong and that are saying they want to fight for justice and for the peace in Palestine but also for the liberation of Palestine and I'm proud of them," said Sorbonne University student Lorelia Frejo. "Even though they ...

The wings of the windmill of the famous Moulin Rouge cabaret in Paris collapsed late on Wednesday night. Authorities said no injuries were reported, and that there was no longer any risk of collapse. Management said the incident was due to a technical problem, and no there was no evidence of vandalism. The fall of the windmill's wings caused damage to the front of the building, lopping off the letters M, O and U from the illuminated sign. On Thursday morning, barriers were put up around the entrance of the establishment. The cleanup operation ended at around 8:35am local time. The only serious...
