Paris (AFP) - Poet Amanda Gorman made her name with a call for unity within the United States, but the job of translating her work in Europe has sparked divisive debate. "To put our future first, we must first put our differences aside," the 23-year-old recited in her now-iconic performance at Joe Biden's presidential inauguration in January. But in Europe, it has been hard to ignore people's differences when it comes to translating that poem, "The Hill We Climb". The furore was kickstarted in the Netherlands when activist-journalist Janice Deul said it was "incomprehensible" that a person wi...

The Hague (AFP) - A Dutch writer has resigned as the translator of poet Amanda Gorman, the young black star of US President Joe Biden's inauguration, after an "uproar" over the fact that a black translator was not chosen. Marieke Lucas Rijneveld, who became the youngest winner of the International Booker Prize last year for their novel "The Discomfort of Evening", was picked for the job by Dutch publisher Meulenhoff. But after criticism in the Netherlands of the fact that a white translator was chosen, Rijneveld, who uses the non-binary pronoun "they", said they were pulling out of the job of ...

The Canadian star opened with his hits "Starboy" and "The Hills," wearing a sparkling red jacket and deploying selfie-esque camera work fit for the age of Covid-19. When the artist born Abel Tesfaye broke into "I Can't Feel My Face," he felt his way through a narrow mirrored hallway, clamoring amo...

New York (AFP) - Amanda Gorman, the young poet who delivered a captivating performance at President Joe Biden's inauguration, opened the Super Bowl on Sunday with a new work celebrating essential workers. The charismatic 22-year-old is the first-ever poet to perform at the National Football League championship, America's most-watched broadcast of the year. In a pre-taped performance Gorman delivered her poem "Chorus of the Captains," paying homage to three people declared honorary captains in the night's coin toss: an educator, an intensive care nurse and a US Marine Corps veteran. "They've ta...

Washington (AFP) - Poet Amanda Gorman on Wednesday became a sudden star at age 22 at President Joe Biden's inauguration as she recited verse inspired by the Capitol attack, touching on how democracy "can never be permanently defeated." Gorman was the youngest poet to recite at an inauguration, a role first given to Robert Frost by John F. Kennedy in 1961, after First Lady Jill Biden saw one of Gorman's readings and invited her to participate at the Capitol steps. Gorman said that she had been writing a few lines a day but stayed awake at night out of a compulsion to complete her inauguration p...
