Countries are not on track to triple renewable energy capacity by 2030, despite their national energy and climate pledges, an analysis from the International Energy Agency (IEA) warns today (June 4). Official commitments in national energy and climate plans currently amount to 1300 gigawatts, IEA stated, only 12% of the goal set at COP28 of tripling capacity. If countries implemented all their pledged ambitions for 2030 however, that would amount to 11,000 gigawatts of installed global renewable capacity. This is led by European countries, the report stated, which contribute a fifth of the ple...

Several airline executives have spoken out against a growing European movement wanting to cap travel and flights abroad in order to support the green transition. Movements such as flight shaming, pioneered by environmental activist Greta Thunberg have been enthusiastically adopted by some members of the public, leaving consumers who can do so, choosing greener ways to travel to avoid the "shame" of taking flights. Airlines, however, are not impressed. The industry has already been struggling since the pandemic, when lockdown prevented most flights and, post the pandemic, soaring energy costs b...

A Spanish cooperative supplier with tens of thousands of members, an Irish cooperative helping citizens renovate their households, a Portuguese cooperative e-car sharing scheme: a tidal wave of citizen-led renewable energy projects is sweeping across Europe. This silent revolution is partly spurred by the recent energy crisis, which pushed millions of households to look for energy independence solutions. This tapestry of inspiring solutions constitutes the lived manifestation of a staggering statistic: by 2050, one in two EU citizens could be producing their own electricity, covering 45% of th...

A city in Spain is starting to use its cemeteries to generate renewable power. Valencia, on the east coast, aims to install thousands of solar panels in graveyards around the city. The project has been dubbed RIP - standing for Requiem in Power - and was launched this month with the first photovoltaic panels installed. The city intends the ambitious initiative to become the largest urban solar farm in Spain. Valencia to create the largest urban solar farm in SpainThe city of Valencia plans to install 6,658 solar panels in local cemeteries. Some 810 have already been laid down in Grau, Campanar...

Efforts to meet Europe’s emission reduction targets led by industry and citizens will pay off according to an analysis published today (May 29) by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which estimates the continent could improve energy security by 8% by 2030. Higher carbon prices, energy efficiency and accelerated permitting for renewables were key policy areas identified by the Washington DC- based IMF to improve Europe’s energy security. “An illustrative policy package that cuts emissions by 55% compared to 1990 levels would improve the two energy security metrics by close to 8% by 2030 for...

Energy minister Tinne van der Straeten has told Euronews she hopes to secure inter-governmental recognition of the benefits of local energy cooperatives this week, at the last energy summit of Belgium’s six-month EU Council presidency. Van der Straeten, a Green in Belgium’s diverse coalition government, was speaking on Tuesday (28 May) after signing an NGO manifesto calling on the next European Parliament and EU executive to promote energy communities, arguing that potential ‘energy citizens’ could invest up to €240bn in the energy transition by 2030. Energy communities are voluntary, cooperat...

Greenhouse gas emissions dropped by an “unprecedented” 5.8 per cent in France last year, President Emmanuel Macron wrote on X this week. The official figures from CITEPA, which provides the data for the French Environment Ministry, are undoubtedly good news. If the country continues along this trajectory, it would be able to meet its national and internationally agreed decarbonisation targets. “It’s historic,” French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal announced on Wednesday, praising “the French way” of excelling at the energy transition. But environmental experts have been equally quick to keep the...

Green groups have welcomed European Commission guidelines underlining the need for thorough environmental impact assessments before governments designate areas for the accelerated deployment of wind turbines, solar arrays and other clean energy infrastructure, amid a drive to reduce dependence on fossil fuel imports from Russia. The RePowerEU plan hastily drafted amid the energy crisis following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022 promised an easing of planning permitting, long identified by the wind power industry as a major bottleneck. But environmental groups were alarmed by the prospect o...

Italian energy giant Eni is considering giving investors a chance to invest in separate stakes in its fossil fuel projects, in a move that is known as a satellite strategy. The projects are likely to be some of the company's very lucrative developments based in the Ivory Coast and Indonesia. This will allow investors who may not be particularly interested in renewable energy projects to make sure their money is funding only the fossil fuel projects they support. Similarly, it will also allow investors who prioritise green projects to ensure that their money is not being used to support fossil ...

Portugal generated an ‘historic’ 95 per cent of its electricity from renewables in April, according to the network operator REN. Renewable energy generation averaged just below that for the first four months of the year, covering 91 per cent of the nation’s power needs. It’s one national good news story within a great continental shift: fossil fuels provided less than a quarter of the EU’s energy for the first time ever last month. Ember, the clean think tank behind that assessment, also found that more than 30 per cent of the world’s electricity is now generated using renewables. “Solar in pa...
