New York (AFP) - A new French cafe is hoping to break into New York's notoriously competitive food scene while also offering opportunity to people with mental and cognitive disabilities. Cafe Joyeux is an "inclusive" chain of restaurants staffed by workers with autism and Down syndrome that has made a mark in France and other European countries and is now targeting the Big Apple. The company's newest branch, Cafe Joyeux Lexington, has picked a cheery corner in the bustling Midtown business district for the company's American debut. Officially inaugurated on Thursday in parallel with World Dow...

Washington (AFP) - To tip, or not to tip? That is the question many Americans are grappling with in a country where the tip is king -- but even at a grocery store? Or for a bunch of flowers? "Either way, you feel guilty," said Matt Schottland, 41, in downtown Washington, a salad and a fruit juice in hand. In the United States, tipping is not a matter of debate in restaurants. A gratuity of around 15 to 20 percent of the value of a meal is a must, as it often makes up the bulk of the waiter's salary. But for a sandwich to go? For Schottland, outside of restaurants, the answer is generally no...

New York (AFP) - McDonald's reported Tuesday a jump in fourth-quarter profits following higher sales in most markets, scoring with consumers worried about inflation. The fast-food giant notched 12.6 percent comparable sales growth globally in the quarter ending December 31. With the exception of China, where Covid-19 restrictions continued to depress sales, major markets including the United States, Japan and Germany all enjoyed solid growth. "Overall we're still seeing the consumer is resilient and it plays to our strengths as a system in terms of being well positioned on value," Chief Execut...

New York (AFP) - Price hikes in the US market helped lift first-quarter sales at McDonald's, while profits tumbled due to an unspecified tax matter, according to results released Thursday. The "Golden Arches" chain scored an impressive 12 percent jump in global comparable sales, reflecting "strategic menu price increases" in the United States and improvement in many overseas markets as Covid-19 restrictions eased, the company said. But a weak spot was China, where the company suffered a drop in comparable sales following fresh government restrictions on Covid-19. The company also was hit by $1...

New York (AFP) - For Jebin Tuladhar, the past two years have been like walking a tightrope as he tried to steer Shanti, the Indian restaurant chain he manages in Boston, through the pandemic. To cope, Shanti in June started offering customers at the restaurant's three locations in and outside the city a subscription deal where a gourmet meal for two costs $80 each month. The plan now has about 80 subscribers, and Tuladhar estimates that if he adds about 10 additional accounts each month, Shanti can soon reach the breakeven point of 160 subscription. From those offering fast food to others wher...

New York (AFP) - "Without us, there would be no Starbucks," said Casey Moore, who, along with dozens of employees of the American coffee chain, wants to unionize. "Just having a say in our workplace is really important to me," she told AFP. But management is pushing back. The battle began in late August, when 49 employees from three shops in Buffalo, New York, near Niagara Falls, officially filed a petition to unionize under the name "Starbucks Workers United." The leaders of the coffee chain jumped into action, sending a battalion of executives, including the iconic former CEO Howard Schultz...

New York (AFP) - "A colleague needs help to recover his bicycle!" says a message in the WhatsApp group of the Delivery Boys United, a team of food delivery workers in New York who are organizing to defend themselves following attacks and thefts. Vicente Carrasco, a 39-year-old from Mexico, formed the group in March after he was assaulted. They aim to protect themselves and their electric bikes, which cost around $3,000 and, along with their phones, are their livelihoods. Every night after a long day riding around the Big Apple, Carrasco and other "deliveristas," mostly men, meet under the Quee...

New York (AFP) - McDonald's sales and profits surged in the second quarter as pandemic restrictions were eased worldwide, according to the results released Wednesday which topped expectations. The global fast-food chain said total comparable store sales in the three months ended June 30 jumped 40.5 percent, pushing profits to $2.2 billion compared just $483.8 million in the same period of 2020. "Our performance is a continued demonstration of the broad-based strength and resiliency of our business," McDonald's President and Chief Executive Officer Chris Kempczinski said in the release, noting ...

Los Angeles (AFP) - Businesses have reopened in Los Angeles and elsewhere in the United States, with "We're hiring" signs everywhere. But if life has a pre-Covid feel, a new challenge has arisen for restaurants: workers are not willing to return at any cost. "We are dealing with a staffing shortage that I have not experienced in my career," said Skyler Gamble, a manager at Acme Hospitality, which oversees several restaurants in Santa Barbara around two hours' drive north of Los Angeles. "Our experience in the last six to nine months as business levels have rebounded, is that fewer and fewer ca...

Washington (AFP) - As the number of Covid-19 cases soared in Washington through the fall and winter, Tizoc Zarate waited tables at a local restaurant -- but struggled to put enough food on the table for himself and his girlfriend. Zarate, 22, says he is angry about the health risks he faced, especially given the low pay -- and the lack of support from his bosses. "I felt as if I couldn't say anything to management," Zarate told AFP, adding that at the time, he and his co-workers felt lucky to be working at all. The Mexican-American server is not alone -- hundreds of restaurant workers and act...
