An avalanche near the Austrian ski resort of Soelden on Thursday killed three people from the Netherlands who were on a skiing and hiking trip, authorities said. Another person was rescued and taken to a hospital. Police said a group of 17 people from the Netherlands, accompanied by four Austrian mountain guides, was climbing toward a mountain refuge, the Martin-Busch-Huette, at about 2,500 metres above sea level when the avalanche, which was about 80 metres wide, hit just before 11 am local time. The mountain rescue service said that three members of the Dutch group were killed, the Austria P...

This year, many of Europe’s ski resorts were forced to close early as high temperatures left mountains snowless. Some have managed to cling on with the help of artificial snow - but is this quick fix really a long-term solution? “Snow production… only constitutes relative and transitory protection against the effects of climate change,” the Cour des Comptes (French Court of Auditors) warned in a report released in February. As global temperatures creep towards breaching the 1.5°C warming threshold, resorts will no longer be able to rely on fake snow to survive. How is artificial snow made?Natu...

One in eight ski resorts worldwide could lack natural snow by the end of the century as quantities of snow diminish due to climate change, according to a German report released on Wednesday evening. "Climate change is significantly altering the patterns of natural snowfall, which has strong but varying consequences for ski resorts worldwide," said Veronika Mitterwallner, a researcher at the University of Bayreuth's Department of Sports Ecology. "In all major ski regions, a substantial decrease in the number of days with natural snow cover is expected under every emission scenario assessed," sa...

Skiers across Europe are arriving at resorts to find historically low levels of snow following an exceptionally mild winter. Stark images from resorts in the likes of France, Austria and Bosnia show huge swathes of mountains almost entirely bare. It’s a striking contrast to how they usually look in mid-to-late February - typically the peak season for winter sports. I tried skiing for the first time in my 30s. I’m not sporty. I hate the cold. And risk-taking isn’t my idea of fun. So switching my usual sunny beach holiday for a weekend on the slopes didn’t come easy. But I’ll try anything once. And after just two days in Avoriaz in the French Alps, I am surprised and a little sheepish to admit that I am now a skiing convert. Yes, I fell over multiple times. My legs are killing me. And I was surrounded by ice and snow. But it was also a fun, magical experience - and not as cold or expensive as I had envisioned. If, like me, you’re considering a ski trip but are feeling a little anxious, here’s everyth...

Skiing is more often than not associated with the rich and, while resorts in the likes of Switzerland, Italy and France can cost a great deal, there are less expensive alternatives. A new study has found that the average price of ski day pass prices across Europe has risen from €47.40 in 2015 to €66.46 in 2023/24. That’s an increase of some 34.8% above inflation. Radical Storage, a luggage and ski equipment storage company, has been analysing the cost of the passes at 100 popular European resorts since 2015. Resorts in Switzerland, perhaps unsurprisingly, make up 9 out of 10 of the most expens...

If you’re keen to hit the slopes this winter but are, like many of us, conscious of your carbon footprint on the way, we have a solution. Why not take a train to the mountains? It seems new services are popping up all the time. Two in particular, Eurostar Snow and Ferrovie dello Stato in Italy, have started running in the last months. While hopping on a bargain flight might be tempting, the average flight to the French Alps from London airports emits just over 122 kilograms of CO2 per passenger. That figure doesn’t even take into account the carbon cost of travelling to and from the airport, n...

Ski resorts across Europe have been left snowless this winter as temperatures spike. Those at lower altitudes have been particularly hard hit, with almost a third of European resorts - from Austria’s Tyrol mountains to France’s Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes - currently forced to close. As the climate heats up, the problem is getting worse. Since the 1960s, there have been five fewer snow days every decade in the French Alps, according to weather service Météo France. Research published last year in the journal Nature showed that if global warming reaches 2°C above pre-industrial levels, more than half ...
