Portugal generated an ‘historic’ 95 per cent of its electricity from renewables in April, according to the network operator REN. Renewable energy generation averaged just below that for the first four months of the year, covering 91 per cent of the nation’s power needs. It’s one national good news story within a great continental shift: fossil fuels provided less than a quarter of the EU’s energy for the first time ever last month. Ember, the clean think tank behind that assessment, also found that more than 30 per cent of the world’s electricity is now generated using renewables. “Solar in pa...

Fossil fuels provided less than a quarter of the EU’s energy for the first time in April. The good news comes from energy think tank Ember which found that the proportion of electricity generated by fossil fuels in the bloc fell to a record low of 23 per cent last month - a sharp drop of 22 per cent compared to April 2023 despite an increase in demand. It also surpasses the previous record low of 27 per cent from May 2023. Wind and solar growth as well as the recovery of hydropower drove the fall in fossil fuel generation and increased the share of renewables in the electricity mix to a record...

More than 30 per cent of the world’s energy is now generated using renewables and the European Union is well ahead of this global average, a new report has found. Energy think tank Ember found that major growth in wind and solar helped push global electricity production past this milestone in 2023. The report covers 80 countries which represent 92 per cent of the world’s energy demand and historic data from 215 other countries. Its authors say that this rapid growth has brought the world to a crucial turning point where fossil fuel generation starts to decline. Clean power sources have already...

President Joe Biden marked Earth Day by announcing $7 billion (€6.6 billion) in federal grants for residential solar projects serving 900,000-plus households in low- and middle-income communities. He also criticised Republicans who want to gut his policies to address climate change. Seeking re-election in November, Biden said, "Despite the overwhelming devastation in red and blue states, there are still those who deny the climate is in crisis." He took specific aim at supporters of former President Donald Trump's "Make America Great Again" movement. "My MAGA Republican friends don't seem to th...

More than 400,000 plug-in solar systems have been installed in Germany, most of them taking up a seamless spot on people’s balconies. New data shows at least 50,000 of the PV devices were added in the first quarter of 2024 alone. A boom born from Germany’s “very strong solar culture”, in the words of one expert. Solar balconies are a piece of the wider energy transition across Europe, explains Jan Osenberg, a policy advisor at the SolarPower Europe association. “We see them as a subset of rooftop solar, but also as something different,” he tells Euronews Green. “We basically see it as a trend ...

32-year-old green energy entrepreneur Yetunde Fadeyi will never forget what inspired her to start a clean energy company in Nigeria. As a six-year-old, Fadeyi’s best friend, Fatima, was killed by carbon monoxide poisoning in her Lagos home, along with her father and pregnant mother. “She often came over for sleepovers. But that day she didn’t,” says Fadeyi. “It was the time that they were stealing people’s generators, so they kept [the generator] in an enclosed area and by the time it was morning they were dead.” Petrol-powered generators like the one Fatima’s family had are valuable assets be...

The wind gusting across north German farm country brings much to the village of Sprakebuell: fog and rain from the sea, the occasional migrating stork, and the faint smell of manure in the newly fertilised fields. And perhaps best of all, money - from selling the electricity generated by the wind turbines studding the flat green fields stretching out to the North Sea. A slice of the cash goes to the villagers themselves, with the local buy-in making this windy farming enclave near the border with Denmark a showcase for ways to push ahead with renewable energy projects. It's not easy when headw...

Living sustainably doesn’t have to mean sacrificing the things we enjoy. In my younger years, I used to be a hoarder and fast fashion addict. But after becoming aware of the environmental impacts of over-consumption, I shifted towards minimising my possessions and prioritised experiences over material things. My partner shares this minimalist philosophy, and when the cost-of-living crisis hit in 2022, we decided to convert a van and leave Wales \- where we had met at university - for a simpler life travelling around Europe. We moved into a small apartment in Aberystwyth and saved up for a year...

One million hectares of land have been earmarked in Morocco for green hydrogen projects, the government announced in a statement on Monday. As part of the first phase, 300,000 hectares will be made available to investors, both foreign and domestic. Green hydrogen refers to hydrogen that has been produced through electrolysis by using renewable energy, rather than relying on electricity generated by fossil fuels. This hydrogen can then be used as a clean energy source, only generating water vapour and heat as byproducts. According to the Moroccan government, hundreds of national and foreign inv...

A French town is installing a canopy of solar panels over its cemetery that will distribute energy to local residents. The idea didn’t start with solar. Saint-Joachim is located in the middle of the Brière marsh - a vast peat bog north of the Loire estuary. When it outgrew its churchyard cemetery in 1970, a new graveyard was created to the east of the town’s main island, a drop from six to zero metres above sea level. Upsettingly for families with loved ones buried there, that means the cemetery often floods in winter. Draining the ground would be a constant battle with the wetland, so Saint-J...
