A collective representing freelance film festival workers in France has called for a strike during the Cannes Film Festival, which begins next Monday (14 May). The labour group, called Sous les écrans, la dèche (Broke behind the screens), said the strike wasn’t meant to shut down the festival, or damage any of the films that are premiering in Cannes, but rather to “disturb” proceedings. A labour strike is an exceedingly rare occurrence for Cannes. The world’s largest film festival has only been affected by social action once in its 76 years of operation. In 1968, the 21st edition of the festiv...

The union representing some three-quarters of Italian public broadcaster Rai's 2,000 radio and television journalists voiced complaints about editorial interference and working conditions, declaring a 24-hour strike on Monday. ''We would rather lose one or more days of pay than lose our freedom, convinced that the freedom and autonomy of public service are a value for all. And Rai belongs to everyone," USIGRai said in a video statement. The one-day strike is the latest protest by Italian journalists against what they say are threats to freedom of the press and expression in Italy — including c...

Germany’s rail strikes will finally come to an end as train drivers’ union GDL has struck a pay deal with Deutsche Bahn. Train travellers have already been hit hard by industrial action this year, from a week-long walkout in January to a series of warning strikes in March. Alongside demanding a pay increase, train drivers have been calling for a reduction in working hours from 38 to 35 per week, without a pay cut. GDL rejected various offers from state-owned DB in a series of negotiations over the past five months. Following Monday’s successful negotiations, DB’s HR director Martin Seiler said...

Millions of travellers across Germany have been hit by strikes again on Thursday after two unions called for two-day walkouts over wages and work conditions. Around 80% of all long-distance trains as well as regional and commuter trains in the country were cancelled as train drivers went on strike. Air travel was affected as well, with ground staff for German airline Lufthansa stopping work early in the morning. The strikes led to traffic jams in cities and on highways, a shortage of share and rental cars, and a rush of plane passengers trying to rebook flights. Students arrived late for schoo...

Taxi drivers began a 48-hour strike in Athens on Tuesday which on its second day will coincide with a nationwide action by public and some private sector workers. On the first day of the strike, called by Athens’ main taxi union, more than 200 taxis drove to the centre of the Greek capital calling for a reduction in taxes, access to bus lanes and stricter regulation on ride-sharing apps. According to taxi driver and union member Georgios Voilis, new taxes imposed on the self-employed...

Junior doctors in South Korea have four days to end their walkouts, the government said on Monday, or they could face prosecution or have their medical licenses suspended. About 9,000 medical interns and residents have stayed off the job since early last week to protest a government plan to increase medical school admissions by about 65%. The walkouts have severely hurt the operations of their hospitals, with numerous cancellations of surgeries and other treatments. Government officials say adding more doctors is necessary to deal with South Korea’s rapidly ageing population. The country's cur...
