There are three episodes left of the first season of the eXcellent X-Men ’97. All three tell a single story in three parts, titled “Tolerance Is Extinction.” It’s already been quite a momentous season for the X-Men, with Professor X’s “death” and reappearance in deep space, Magneto joining the team and becoming its leader in Xavier’s absence, Storm’s loss and restoration of her powers, and most shockingly, the death of Gambit. A new and “final” trailer for the season just debuted and while a lot of its footage comes from episodes that have already debuted, it does feature some new scenes — inc...

Part prequel, part sequel, whatever you call it, the new Disney film Mufasa: The Lion King is definitely a star-studded project. The film was directed by Oscar winner Barry Jenkins and features new songs by Lin-Manuel Miranda. The voice cast includes many returning voices from the “live-action” remake of The Lion King including Donald Glover as Simba, Beyonce as Nala, Seth Rogen as Pumbaa, and Billy Eichner as Timon. Plus it has a whole new cast as well including Aaron Pierre as Mufasa, Kelvin Harrison Jr., Tiffany Boone, Mads Mikkelsen, and Thandiwe Newton. Like The Lion King of a few years a...

This Memorial Day … Jennifer Lopez gets an exo-suit. On Netflix. The film is called Atlas, and it stars Lopez in a sci-fi thriller about a future menaced by an AI terrorist. (Clearly, not the far future.) The only person who can stop it is J.Lo, with the help of her very own advanced robot fighting suit, which has its own personality that talks to her. Simu Liu and Sterling K. Brown also star. The trailer for Atlas suggests it’s sort of like Iron Man but an iron woman talking to the robot voice in her head, and also instead of a sleek suit of armor it’s an oversized walking tank like something...

M. Night Shyamalan’s 16th (!) film as director is Trap, and it looks like it has a classic Shyamalan premise: What if a dad took his teenage daughter to see the pop star she loved only to find out … the concert was as trap designed to catch a serial killer. And what if the dad was the serial killer? Duh duh duhhhhhhh! (Someone should write a book about M. Night Shyamalan and the title should be Duh Duh Duhhhhhhh! The Films of M. Night Shyamalan. I’d buy a copy.) Such is the story of Trap, starring Josh Hartnett as the loving father and also, apparently, the serial killer known as “The Butcher....

The latest Transformers movie will look very different. Instead of live-action, the franchise is going back to its roots in animation. And it’s going back to its roots narratively as well, as Transformers One is an origin story for the Transformers, revealing how they became robots in disguise and more than meets the eye and various other catchphrases. The film is set so far back in the characters’ backstories, in fact, that Optimus Prime and Megatron aren’t even called that yet; they’re going by the names Orion Pax and D-16. They’re not enemies either; they’re buddies. And neither one can tra...

The next Transformers movie is launching its promotional campaign in an extremely literal way: The first trailer for the movie will supposedly debut in space. Truth be told, I do not fully understand what that means. (Hopefully I do not have to go to space to watch it; I specifically became a film critic because I was promised that this job meant I would never under any circumstances have to go into space.) But according to the press release, the upcoming Transformers One — an animated origin movie for the Transformers franchise — will “launch in space.” The show will begin online this Thursda...

We’re at the halfway point of the first season ofX-Men ’97, and this show has already given us ’90s nostalgia, tons of mutant drama, some shocking deaths, boatloads of cameos, clever adaptations of classic X-Men comics, and Magneto’s magnificent hair. If the new trailer for the rest of the season is to be believed, things are only going to get wilder from here on out, with more twists, even higher stakes, and the X-Men ’97 debut of Captain America. Or at least of Captain America’s shield, which makes a brief appearance in the new teaser. Who else would be throwing that thing though? Cap did ma...

This is not a joke: The Joker sequel is a full-blown musical. The first trailer for Joker: Folie à Deuxis here, and it confirms that the film will feature a Joker (once again played by Oscar winner Joaquin Phoenix) with a song in his heart. He will be joined by Lady Gaga, who will play this Joker’s version of his star-crossed love, Harley Quinn. Also returning from the first film is Todd Phillips, Joker’s co-writer and director. The trailer shows Joker and Harley falling in love in a mental institution, and using music and dance to seemingly escape from the horrors of their incarceration. Half...

Look, we all complain a lot about Hollywood only making sequels, only doing remakes, and basically just rehashing the same four plots over and over again. So if nothing else, you have to give Fly Me to the Moon this: It definitely is not a premise and genre I would have ever expected. It is a romantic comedy built around NASA faking the moon landing. Technically speaking, the film doesn’t appear to suggest the Moon landing was fake, a long-standing conspiracy theory among some. Instead, it imagines that NASA might have been so driven to succeed at the Moon landing, and so focused on beating th...

In just a handful of years, Ti West has made an entire trilogy of films about the intersection of Hollywood, sex, and stardom. It started with 2022’s X, an unusual slasher movie about a killer murdering the cast and crew of an porno film in the late 1980s. Next came Pearl, a prequel set decades earlier about an old lady (played by Mia Goth under heavy prosthetic makeup) in her earlier days trying to make it as an actress. Now comes MaXXXine, a full-on sequel to X also starring Goth, this time as her other character from X, another aspiring actress who shares her name with this new movie’s titl...
