Tensions have risen between the US and Israel ahead of a meeting between the two countries' defence ministers. US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin will meet with Israel's minister of defence on Tuesday and discuss ways to defeat Hamas other than conducting a ground invasion of the southern Gaza city of Rafah, the Pentagon said. Austin's planned morning meeting with Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant is still on, even though Israel abruptly cancelled the visit of a high-level delegation to Washington this week. Netanyahu cancelled the visit in protest over Monday’s UN Security Council decision...

The UN Security Council will today vote on a resolution declaring “an immediate and sustained cease-fire” in Gaza. The US-sponsored bill aims to protect civilians and enable the delivery of humanitarian aid to more than two million Palestinian people. A previous draft of the bill shared earlier this month emphasised a hostage deal in supporting international efforts for a ceasefire. But the new document does not link an immediate pause with the release of hostages captured on the 7 October attack. “Toward that end", however, it would unequivocally support diplomatic efforts “to secure such a c...

The Spanish region of Catalonia is experiencing one of the worst droughts in living memory. At no point in the last century have water shortages been so severe. Last month, officials in the northeast Spanish region declared a drought emergency, with reservoirs that serve six million people - including the population of Barcelona - under 16 percent of their capacity - a historic low. Spain has seen three years of below-average rainfall amid record high temperatures, and conditions are only expected to get worse because of climate change, which is predicted to impact the Mediterranean area faste...

The UN labour agency Profits and poverty report said forced sexual exploitation was to blame for three-fourths of the take from a business that deprives migrants of money they can send home, swipes jobs from legal workers, and allows the criminals behind it to avoid taxes. After sexual exploitation, the sectors with the highest illegal profits are industry (€32 billion), services (€19 billion), agriculture (€4.6 billion), and domestic work (€2 billion). Total annual illegal profits from forced labour are highest in Europe and Central Asia (€77 billion), followed by Asia and the Pacific (€57 bi...

The head of the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) said on Tuesday that more children have been killed in four months of war in Gaza than in four years of wars worldwide. In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, Philippe Lazzarini described the ongoing offensive in the Palestinian enclave as a war against children. “This war is a war on children. It is a war on their childhood and their future," he said. Lazzarini described as “staggering” the latest figures showing that more than 12,300 children had died in Gaza between October 2023 and February 2024, compared to 12,1...

The gravity of the situation has prompted the UN to issue a warning of a potential famine. In response, the United States and other international governments have advocated for a surge in aid to the besieged Palestinian enclave. Given the closure of most border crossings into Gaza, they have resorted to airdrops as a means of delivering assistance. Gaza ceasefire talks fail days before RamadanParticularly in the heavily affected northern region, many people are struggling to obtain food for survival, amplifying international pressure on both Israel and Hamas to reach a resolution. Turkey has joined Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Jordan in condemning Israeli forces for shooting desperately hungry Palestinians waiting for the delivery of aid. The Turkish Foreign Ministry accused Israel of using “starvation as a weapon of war in Gaza.” At least 112 Palestinians were killed and hundreds more wounded, the Health Ministry in Gaza, which is run by the Hamas militant group, said. Health officials accused Israeli troops of firing heavily into the crowd, as more than 80 per cent of the wounded brought to one hospital had been struck by gunfire. They initially reported an Israeli strike ...

At least 71 Palestinians in southern and central Gaza have been killed by Israeli airstrikes within just 24 hours, according to health officials in the territory on Thursday. The news comes as diplomatic efforts to secure a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas continue. A member of Israel’s War Cabinet revealed late Wednesday that new attempts are being made to negotiate a truce that could temporarily halt the conflict in Gaza. However, tensions continue to escalate, including in the Israeli-occupied West Bank. Early on Thursday, three gunmen killed one Israeli and injured at least five others n...

The World Food Program said on Tuesday it had suspended food deliveries to northern Gaza due to the increasing chaos across the enclave, raising fears of famine. One in six children in the north are "accurately malnourished", according to a study by the UN's children's agency. Entry of aid trucks into the besieged territory has been more than halved in the past two weeks, UN figures show. Overwhelmed UN and relief workers said aid deliveries have been crippled by Israel's bombardment and ground offensive and a collapse in security, with desperate Palestinians frequently overwhelming trucks to ...
