There's an old myth that says "you leave a bit of your soul in everything you crochet," adding: "To avoid this, you should always work in a hidden mistake so that your soul can escape.” While a welcome joke for all those "hookers" that have spent many an infuriating hour unravelling yarn, the idea of people leaving a part of themselves in their crafts feels very true. From the ceramic mugs we drink our coffee in, to the teak tables we rest said mugs on (hopefully using a coaster), all craftsmanship has a deeply personal connection that sensualises and shapes the very fabric of our lives. The UK economy grew by 0.6% in the first three months of this year, according to figures released by the Office for National Statistics on Friday. This exceeds forecasts of 0.4% given by both the Bank of England (BoE) and economists polled by Reuters. The GDP result also brings the UK out of last year's shallow recession, marked by two consecutive quarters of declining output. Last year, the economy contracted by 0.1% in the third quarter and 0.3% in the fourth quarter. GDP on a monthly basis grew by 0.3% in January, an upwardly-revised 0.2% in February, and 0.4% in March. Friday's data will c...

The Bank of England (BoE) has opted to maintain the bank rate at 5.25% in its May meeting, as expected, underscoring its commitment to maintain a restrictive monetary policy, aimed at anchoring inflation back to its 2% target over the medium term. In a split decision, Monetary Policy Committee members Swati Dhingra and Dave Ramsden advocated for a reduction of the rate by 0.25 percentage points to 5%, diverging from the majority of seven members. This represents a shift from previous meetings, where typically only one member dissented. With this decision the cost of borrowing in the United Kin...

Ireland's government has moved to remove tents occupied by asylum seekers in Dublin. After many weeks of concern about their conditions, the area around the International Protection office in the Irish capital was cleared. The move however simply saw asylum seekers move 200 metres down the road to a nearby canal due to a scarcity of accommodation. Ireland has recently seen an influx of people seeking international protection from the UK, with asylum seekers coming across the open border with Northern Ireland. London's controversial plan to deport asylum seekers to Rwanda has caused some to fle...

The U.K. will expel a Russian defense attache, saying they are an "undeclared military intelligence officer," British Home Secretary James Cleverly said on May 8. Speaking to parliament, Cleverly said the move was in response to an increase in malign activity from the Kremlin, both in the U.K. and across Europe. "Today in conjunction with the Foreign Secretary (David Cameron), I am announcing a package of measures to make clear to Russia that we will not tolerate such apparent escalations," he said. "I can tell the House that we will expel the Russian defense attache, who is an undeclared mili...

E-gates at airports across the UK have returned to normal following a mass outage which caused disruption and huge queues for thousands of passengers. On Tuesday, the electronic gates Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Edinburgh, Birmingham, Manchester and Bristol airports stopped working, delaying passengers who were trying to cross the UK border. The British Home Office has ruled out a cyberattack as the cause. They say the widespread delays were down to a nationwide technical outage. "As soon as engineers detected a wider system network issue at 19:44 pm last night, a large-scale contingency resp...

In the beautifully restored main hall of the Gorton Monastery in Manchester, a man in a wheelchair starts singing ‘Danny Boy’. The man has dementia and is part of a weekly group that gives people living with the debilitating illness support through musical workshops. The man’s voice is beautiful. Timid at first, the supportive atmosphere brings him out of his shell until his deep tones echo across the monastery. The workshop is part of Music in Mind, a programme that’s been run by the Manchester Camerata in Gorton for 12 years, and is about to be rolled out for every borough in the Greater Man...

The UK government is preparing for chaos ahead of the launch of the EU’s Entry-Exit system (EES). The incoming EU border scheme, set to be in place from 6 October, is expected to cause delays at the Port of Dover, south east England. Guy Opperman, a minister in the UK’s transport department, has now explained the scheme will have a “six-month soft launch” to make the process more simple. Speaking at the House of Commons’ European Scrutiny Committee, Opperman said the plan will enable a “greater freedom of passage of vehicles” if queues build due to the EES. The scheme will see travellers from ...
