Washington (AFP) - The US trade deficit was wider than analysts anticipated in March -- hovering close to the biggest in nearly a year -- with exports and imports both declining, according to government data published Thursday. The trade gap came in at $69.4 billion, narrowing slightly from February's $69.5 billion figure -- which had been revised larger, said the Commerce Department. Analysts had expected a figure of $69.0 billion, according to Briefing.com. While consumption has helped to support US trade, economists see trade flows easing ahead with cooler global demand and growth. Elevated...

Los Angeles (AFP) - Hundreds of police cleared a sprawling protest encampment early Thursday at the University of California, Los Angeles, tearing down barriers and arresting students in the latest clash on US campuses over Israel's war against Hamas in Gaza. Officers in riot gear ripped down a wooden barricade around the UCLA protest site and dragged tents away in the fresh round of university unrest. For weeks, authorities on campuses from New York to California have tried to thread the needle between the right to protest and complaints of violence and hate speech, resulting in hundreds of a...

Strasbourg (France) (AFP) - Italy is allowed to confiscate an ancient Greek bronze fished from the Adriatic in the 1960s and now in the Getty Museum in Los Angeles, the European Court of Human Rights ruled Thursday. Representing a nude athlete and known in the United States as "Victorious Youth", the statue vanished following its 1964 discovery until its 1977 purchase by the museum. The Getty has since refused to return it to Italy. The museum had appealed to the Strasbourg-based court after Italy's top tribunal in 2019 upheld an Italian confiscation order for the bronze. Rome has been trying ...

New York (AFP) - The judge overseeing Donald Trump's trial for covering up payments to suppress details of an alleged affair will hear Thursday that the former president has again breached a gag order intended to protect trial participants. Judge Juan Merchan has already sanctioned the property mogul for defying his order on nine occasions, fining him $9,000 on Tuesday and warning Trump he could face jail for continuing to lash out on social media. Merchan also instructed Trump to remove seven "offending posts" from his Truth Social account and two from a campaign website. The posts were remov...

Phoenix (AFP) - Wearing a bulletproof vest and with a gun strapped to his waist, Constable Lennie McCloskey opens his folder and looks through the court orders: eleven evictions to be carried out today. "It's a slow day" in Maricopa County, Arizona, he says. Maricopa is home to Phoenix, one of the fastest growing cities in the United States, a place where rents have skyrocketed since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, leaving an ever-increasing number of people in trouble. "I typically do between 19 and 25 (evictions) a day," said McCloskey, one of 26 such officers in Maricopa. Much of the Un...

The US government is targeting Russia's weapons production with new sanctions, the US Treasury Department said on Wednesday. Some 200 companies and 80 individuals in third countries such as China, Belgium and Slovakia, which allegedly support Russia in the procurement of materials for its weapons programme, are affected, it said. The sanctions are also aimed at Russia's production of chemical and biological weapons. "Today’s actions will further disrupt and degrade Russia’s war efforts by going after its military industrial base and the evasion networks that help supply it," US Treasury Secret...

Jacksonville (AFP) - US Vice President Kamala Harris sought to make Donald Trump the face of Florida's strict new abortion ban Wednesday as Democrats hammer the issue ahead of November's presidential election. "Across our nation, we witness a full-on assault, state by state, on reproductive freedom. And understand who's to blame: former president Donald Trump did this," Harris said in a Jacksonville, Florida speech. Florida's harsh new ban took effect Wednesday, outlawing all abortions after six weeks of pregnancy in a state that had been one of the last in the southern United States with a re...

Washington (AFP) - The US Federal Reserve on Wednesday held interest rates steady for a sixth straight meeting, keeping the level at a 23-year high to fight stubborn price increases. After a two-day gathering, the central bank decided unanimously to keep the benchmark lending rate unchanged at 5.25-5.50 percent, citing a "lack of further progress" towards its two percent inflation target. "The economic outlook is uncertain, and the Committee remains highly attentive to inflation risks," the Fed said in a statement. For months, the US central bank has held its benchmark lending rate at a high l...

Los Angeles (AFP) - Legislators in Arizona's upper house voted Wednesday to repeal an 1864 law banning abortion, a month after the state's supreme court said the Civil War-era rule was valid. The turnaround was the latest development in the fraught US abortion debate, which is expected to play a huge role in this year's presidential election, a likely rematch between President Joe Biden and Donald Trump. "I'm glad to see the Senate answered my call and voted to repeal the 1864 total abortion ban," the state's Democratic Governor Katie Hobbs wrote on social media. "While this is essential to pr...
