More than one third of the most eurosceptic voters believe the EU should prioritise a common defence policy, an exclusive poll produced for Euronews shows. An Ipsos survey of 26,000 of the EU electorate showed nearly half favour pooling military powers – a result that will likely come as a comfort to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who’s made defence a central plank of her re-election campaign. The poll, which probed views in countries representing 96% of the EU population ahead of bloc-wide elections due in June, showed voters are most concerned about inflation, inequality...

The agreement struck by ambassadors in Brussels will inject an additional €5 billion into the European Peace Facility (EPF) until the end of the year, which will come on top of the €6.1 billion committed since early 2022. The EPF gained prominence in the immediate aftermath of Russia's war as member states rushed to provide Kyiv with the military equipment kept in their national stocks. The facility partially reimburses the costs of these donations, allowing all countries, from the largest to the smallest, to chip in and help out. European countries have nearly doubled their arms imports between 2014-2018 and 2019-2023, boosting their purchases by 94% in the period observed, according to a new study by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI). Much of this increase was due to the transfers of arms to Ukraine, which is still fighting off the Russian invasion and which, between 2022 and 2023, received 23% of the region’s arms import in 2019-2023. Two European countries - France and Italy - have also significantly stepped up their exports in the same period, finding willing buyers in Europe, Asia and th...

Denise Brown, the UN’s top representative in Ukraine, said an estimated 8.5 million Ukrainians living in dire conditions near combat zones risk going without basic humanitarian deliveries, including food and water. The UN's annual appeal for Ukraine is $3.1 billion. “If we don’t receive that money, I don’t know where that money is going to come from,” Brown told The Asso...

In the Zaporizhzhia region, Ukrainian soldiers are using their remaining ammunition sparingly to resist Russian offensives. "If there's no real target, I don't shoot. That way, I'll still have ammunition tomorrow," artillery commander Olexander said. The Ukrainian army chief announced on Saturday that he was pulling troops from the city of Avdiivka to preserve soldiers' lives. According to Ukraine's 3rd Brigade, Russian warplanes had dropped about 60 bombs a day on the area as well as launching assaults with armor and infantry. On the same day, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy appealed ...
