DEAR ANNIE: My husband and I are senior citizens. We are close friends with two other couples; we all have other friends, but these four people in particular have been our core group for years. Over the last few weeks, male friend No. 1 has stopped talking to our male friend No. 2. No. 1 has totally stopped answering texts and calls from No. 2. If my husband or I text No. 1, he will answer but will not join us if we invite him and his wife to a group gathering. He just says they are staying in. No. 2 has texted No. 1 and apologized for whatever it was he did with still no answer. It puts me an...

A Camden County man was arrested and charged with arson and stalking-related vandalism after authorities say he doused a car in gasoline and lit it on fire. Michael McNeely, 42, of Haddon Township, was charged with second-degree aggravated arson and third-degree criminal mischief in a car fire at a home in Haddonfield on Concord Circle, the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office announced Saturday. April marked the 11th consecutive month with record global heat. And warning signs that it will be another scorcher of a summer in the Northeast have been plentiful too. New Jersey workers, especially those used to laboring outside, know this already and some are fighting for more protections. State lawmakers have advanced an Assembly bill to provide more protections for workers dealing with sweltering temps while on the clock. A companion Senate bill, both now out of committee, was similarly advanced earlier in May. The measure would need to be passed by both legislative bodies before Gov. Ph...

The wife of a man killed two years ago when he was struck by a driver being chased by police in Paterson has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the city and Passaic County. Haiyan Wei, of New York, states in court papers that police officers and sheriff’s deputies acted recklessly on May 17, 2022, when they pursued a driver who ultimately crashed into Jun Ting Pan, 40, who was crossing at Market and Main streets. A spokesman for the county did not immediately respond on Friday to a request for comment on the lawsuit. Harold Rasbin, 33, had allegedly taken an SUV without permission and was ...

After pulling together donations and personal funds, Gladys Krasicki purchased a vacant motel in Atlantic County last March with hopes of transforming it into a shelter to house homeless veterans. With the help of the community and volunteers from her nonprofit, Veterans 101, so far she has been able to permanently house about nine veterans at the former Crest Motel in Absecon. And, once room renovations are completed in September, the facility will accommodate over a dozen more veterans in need, according to officials. The motel, located on Absecon Boulevard off Route 30, will soon be officia...

DEAR AMY: I believe that my brother is addicted to pot. I know that pot is legal and I don’t care if people use it (I do, recreationally), but he is high All. The. Time. He is incredibly unreliable and just an overall stoner. I have young children and they (and I) love him. But I am reluctant to let him take the kids places unless I am with him. I guess I need a gut check. I’m wondering what you think. — Unsure Sister and Mom DEAR UNSURE: Your most basic job as a parent is to try your hardest to ensure your children’s safety. The way you describe your brother, he doesn’t sound able to be respo...

DEAR ANNIE: When the time comes -- hopefully I pass before my loving husband and faithful partner of nearly 25 years, but if not -- I could use a few words of advice as to how to deal with my estranged stepdaughter, her bitter mother (both vultures) and her young children who I’ve never met due to an unresolved falling out many years ago. I just know that if my husband were to pass first that there will be drama beyond words. My step-daughter has led nothing but a chaotic, drama-filled life and is a very unhappy, soon-to-be divorced mother of four. Between her and her mother (who never found a...

DEAR ABBY: My husband has a 36-year-old daughter from a one-night stand. For the last two years, she has been wanting to meet his family, aunts, uncles. She has met them all except for our own children -- her half-siblings. Our children are adults and don’t want a relationship with her. She wasn’t part of their life when they were growing up, and now she’s calling their father Dad. I feel awkward as well, knowing my husband knew about her and wanted nothing to do with her when she was younger. His family has accepted her and is pressuring our children to accept her and let her hang out. Are we...

REUSING PLASTIC SANDWICH BAGS Dear Heloise: Growing up on a farm in the 1960s, there weren’t a lot of reusable sandwich bag options on the market. My mother, who was Dutch and loved tulips, had a dowel cut into 9-inch pieces and drilled three holes into a wooden base to stick them inside. The tops of the dowels were three tulip shapes cut out of wood. Not having a dishwasher, we would turn plastic bags inside out, scrub them clean in the soapy water and hang them to dry on the “tulip rack.” Fast forward 60 years, and my son and daughter-in-law gave me a baby-bottle-drying rack, which functions...

This Princeton home is not just grand — it’s fit for a president. It was once owned by Grover Cleveland — the only U.S. President to serve two non-consecutive terms. He bought it to retire to after his second term as President ended in 1897 and lived there until his death in 1908. The six bedroom, five full and two half bathroom home is on the market now for $5.95 million. “Architecturally it is magnificent,” said Maura Mills Callaway of Henderson Sotheby’s International Realty, the listing agent. The home is known as Westland. It was built in 1856 for Robert F. Stockton, a U.S. Senator and na...
