N.J. man doused car with gas, lit it on fire, cops say

A Camden County man was arrested Friday and charged with arson and stalking-related vandalism after authorities say he doused a car in gasoline and lit it on fire in October.

Michael McNeely, 42, of Haddon Township, was charged with second-degree aggravated arson and third-degree criminal mischief in a car fire at a home in Haddonfield on Concord Circle, the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office announced Saturday.

McNeely was also charged with petty disorderly offenses in connection with a block thrown through a window at the same residence in Haddonfield on June 20, 2019, as well as stalking charges at various times between 2019 and 2023 in Haddonfield and Medford.

At about 1:15 a.m. on Oct. 21, Haddonfield police responded to a residence on Concord Circle for a report of a car fire. Surveillance footage captured a person pouring gasoline on the car and then lighting it on fire, investigators said.

Police responded to the same residence for car fires on Oct. 18, 2017, and June 25, 2021, authorities said. Those fires remain under investigation, according to the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office.

McNeely is also accused of vandalizing a bench with spray paint on the first block of High Point Drive in Medford on Nov. 9. Authorities used “digital evidence” to identify McNeely as the suspect in this case, officials said.

McNeely was arrested in Haddonfield on Friday and is being held at the Camden County Correctional Facility pending his first court appearance.

An attorney for McNeely could not be reached Saturday for comment.
