You've been eating your food in the wrong order, says biochemist

Much has been made over the years about the types of food we consume and how they can impact our health but biochemist and author Jessie Inchauspé has revealed that the order in we eat our food can also have a significant effect on our bodies.

The French biochemist, who shares helpful hacks via her social media accounts – on Instagram she boasts more than 3.6 million followers, has spoken about the apparent ‘correct order’ to eat food in both her books as well as through podcast appearances.

Biochemist explains there is a ‘correct order’ to eat your food

Last year, Jessie Inchauspé appeared on an episode of the Feel Better, Live More podcast hosted by Dr Rangan Chatterjee and clips from their discussion have circulated across social media in the months since.

Jessie began her discussion with Dr Chatterjee by touching on the topic of eating food in the correct order and she claimed that doing so could help to reduce the glucose spike of a meal by up to 75%, thereby leading to “fewer cravings, less inflammation, less inching towards diabetes.”

According to the biochemist, the correct order to eat your food is as follows:

  • Vegetables first
  • Proteins and fats second
  • Starches and sugars last

Fab fiber

“The main reason why this is so effective,” Jessie explained,” is because vegetables contain fiber (which is part of plant foods your body can’t fully digest) and fiber when it arrives first in your digestive system, it has time to do something amazing.”

“Fiber deploys itself onto the wall of your upper intestine, forming a protective gooey mesh that stays there for a few hours,” she added. “That mesh prevents your body from absorbing too much glucose too quickly from the food coming down afterwards.”

“Even if you eat the exact same meal, same quantity, same amount, just by switching up the order, the food will have a vastly different impact on your body and you’ll help your body process the meal in an easier fashion,” Jessie concluded.

Inchauspé’s advice in this area is backed up by several scientific institutions and Harvard’s School of Public Health states that “fiber helps regulate the body’s use of sugars, helping to keep hunger and blood sugar in check.”

While Jessie Inchauspé touched upon this method in her appearance on the Feel Better, Live More podcast, it’s also a topic she covers in her 2022 bestselling debut book Glucose Revolution: The life-changing power of balancing your blood sugar.
