‘Wow’: Mark Schwarzer left stunned after what £15m Tottenham player did at Fulham

Mark Schwarzer has reacted to Timo Werner missing a sitter in Tottenham Hotspur’s defeat at Fulham on Saturday.

It was a hugely disappointing evening for Ange Postecoglou and Spurs as they suffered a 3-0 defeat at Craven Cottage.

One moment summed up Tottenham’s display in the final third as Timo Werner failed to convert an opportunity from two yards out.

The German came off the bench in the 66th minute as Spurs looked to mount an unlikely comeback at 3-0 down.

Just three minutes later, Werner was presented with a brilliant opportunity to grab a goal back for his side.

Brennan Johnson fizzed the ball across the box from the right-hand side, putting it on a plate for Werner. But the 28-year-old somehow managed to steer the ball wide of the Fulham goal.

He received criticism on the night, with pundit Matt Jarvis claiming he simply had to score. Now, former Fulham goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer has labelled Werner’s effort as ‘honking’.

Speaking on The Optus Sport Football Podcast, Schwarzer reacted to Werner’s missed opportunity.

“Wow,” he said. “Bridgey [Michael Bridges], have you been that close before and missed? I’ve never been that close and missed. I mean that was a honking effort.”

Werner seemed to be finding his confidence in front of goal ahead of the trip to Craven Cottage.

The loanee had netted two in his last two appearances for Spurs, including a well-taken effort at Villa Park.

His latest display has led to criticism from the likes of Gabriel Agbonlahor, who believes Werner should be nowhere near Tottenham’s starting XI.

Yet, the forward certainly wasn’t the only Spurs player who proved to be wasteful in front of goal on the night.

On the whole, Werner has emerged as a useful option for Postecoglou since his loan switch from RB Leipzig in January. But you’d imagine that he will have to start taking his opportunities more regularly for Tottenham to take up the £15 million option to buy the forward this summer.
