What Takehiro Tomiyasu used to do in training sessions in Italy before joining Arsenal

Arsenal fans will still be revelling in the news that Takehiro Tomiyasu has committed his long term future to the club after signing his new deal.

Perhaps it may have been a surprise that Tomiyasu’s deal only runs until 2026, with the option for a further year, but Arsenal seem to be edging on the side of caution.

Although the 25-year-old is an immense talent, he has suffered from a consistent run of injuries since signing for the club.

Tomiyasu, who is recovering from a calf issue right now, also underwent knee surgery in March last year, and has only played for the club 73 times in total since signing in 2021.

Therefore, fans will expect that contract to be swiftly extended should he steer clear of these issues in the future.

All that being said, The Athletic have now shared an report providing a little more insight into Tomiyasu as a person, as well as a footballer.

The Japan international has always been regarded as a very conscientious character at Arsenal, something that translates into his deep understanding of the game.

However, he’s also just incredibly hard working too.

There’s a reason why Takehiro Tomiyasu is so versatile at Arsenal

According to the report, and as detailed by his former sporting director at Bologna, Marco Di Vaio, Tomiyasu used to sometimes complete three training sessions in a day, when only one was required.

Di Vaio explained: “He loved working, he would arrive at the training ground early in the morning by himself because he had his individual programme.

“Then he’d train with the team and, after the main session, he would stay even longer to work more with the defensive coach on how he received and played long balls off both feet.”

Of course, the both feet training has clearly paid dividends given Tomiyasu is now one of the most versatile players at the club.

It seems as if Mikel Arteta would trust Tomiyasu to play any position across the back line for an entire season.

Perhaps Tomiyasu is now the club’s most well-rounded left back too, even if Jurrien Timber may prove otherwise once he’s fully fit.

But either way, Arsenal fans will be so happy to have Tomiyasu at the club, a player who clearly has the attitude to match his rich ability.

That being said, Tomiyasu did recently admit he didn’t realise how good one player was before signing.
