'It would be amazing': Dirk Kuyt urges Liverpool to bring in £96k-a-week manager

Liverpool are in the market for a new manager after boss Jurgen Klopp confirmed he was leaving Anfield in the summer, with a number of names being linked with the job at the end of the season.

It will be interesting to see the direction in which Liverpool go. Whether they hire a manager that can continue the mould in which has put in place at Anfield – or, a manager that rips up Klopp‘s script.

Plenty of names have been linked. It is claimed that Julian Nagelsmann is quite high on the seven-man managerial list that Liverpool have put in place. Roberto De Zerbi has also been linked with Liverpool.

But of course, the favourite to take over from Klopp remains to be Xabi Alonso. The Bayer Leverkusen gaffer is starring in his role in Germany, leading ahead of his old sides Bayern Munich to the title.

Of course, Alonso played 210 times for Liverpool – winning the Champions League and The FA Cup during his time at Anfield. That is before the midfielder went to Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.

Dirk Kuyt says it would be amazing if Liverpool hire Xabi Alonso

It is claimed that Liverpool are not the only side tracking Alonso – with both Madrid and Bayern, two more of his old clubs, also keen on hiring the Spanish boss. But Liverpool is his likeliest destination.

Dirk Kuyt is in town along with a number of Liverpool legends, ahead of this weekend’s clash against Ajax. He told The Echo that “it would be amazing” if the club did make the move to hire Alonso as boss.

“People almost cannot believe someone other than Bayern Munich are going to win the league. That shows the quality of Xabi Alonso. He was always thinking tactically; talking tactically off the pitch.

“It would be amazing if Xabi or maybe Steven (Gerrard) in the future will become a manager of Liverpool. I am really looking forward to who will get the job but if Xabi gets it I wish him all the best,” Kuyt said.

Is Alonso the best option that Liverpool can decide to bring in

Alonso is right up there. Nagelsmann would be a superb choice but it would mean Liverpool would have to until after Euro 2024, with Nagelsmann set to take his country into this summer’s competition.

De Zerbi is proven in the Premier League. Lens boss Franck Haise has been loosely linked but you would imagine he might not galvanise a fan base with confidence. A name with a big calibre is required.

£96k-a-week Alonso is the best option. He has that calibre, a proven track record as a manager and that Liverpool connection. There is no doubt that Liverpool should go after Alonso, before anyone else.
