Spurs now have great chance of signing 'extraordinary' £51m star likened to Toni Kroos, he wants move - opinion

Tottenham Hotspur are likely to bolster their midfield ranks at the end of the season amid speculation linking them with a host of midfielders.

With Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Tanguy Ndombele facing uncertain futures at Spurs and the jury still out on Oliver Skipp, there’s certainly scope for reinforcements in the middle of the park.

Tottenham fans will probably be aware of widespread speculation linking Spurs with Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher, but he’s not the only midfielder the Lilywhites are said to be after.

For instance, Atalanta and Netherlands ace Teun Koopmeiners has been linked with a move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in recent months.

Tuttosport reported earlier in February that Spurs have ‘knocked on the door’ of the Italian club about the 26-year-old.

Now, Koopmeiners has made some comments in the media that suggest the time is right for the likes of Tottenham to make a move.

Dutch outlet De Telegraaf quote him as saying: “Last year there was concrete interest from Napoli.

“However, in the end the two clubs did not find an agreement. I told Atalanta that in the coming summer I want to leave.”

And though Koopmeiners admitted it would take something ‘really interesting’ to make him leave Bergamo this summer, he made it clear that the Premier League is his preference..

“My fiancée and I are having a great time in Italy, but for some clubs in England I could even bear the rainy days there… I hope options present themselves so I can think about it,” he said.

Why would Teun Koopmeiners be good for Tottenham Hotspur?

Considering Tottenham have struck gold in the Italian market a fair few times in recent years, it looks as though Koopmeiners could be a good option for them.

He has been shining for Atalanta, registering 112 appearances, 26 goals and 12 assists for the Bergamo club. He also has 20 Netherlands caps to his name.

Back in 2021, Total Football Analysis wrote: “The Dutchman is an extremely composed and cultured player at the base of midfield.

“And since he is left-footed and can drop back to play at centre-back as well, there have been some comparisons to his compatriot Daley Blind, as well as to Nemanja Matic.”

Atalanta hero Domenico Progna previously described the reported Tottenham target as “extraordinary“, while Koopmeiners’ agent Bert Baving has likened him to Toni Kroos.

He previously told FC Inter News: “He’s a Toni Kroos, Jorginho, (Nemanja) Matic or (Manuel) Locatelli type, only that Teun will score more goals than any of these players.”

Koopmeiners seems to tick quite a few boxes for Tottenham and for the Premier League in general. He’s a high-quality midfielder who’s calm, composed, can defend and can also chip in with goals.

Let’s see whether Spurs decide to push for the £51million-rated dynamo in the coming months.
