TV star spent seven years bedbound before drastic 300lb weight loss

My 600-lb Life season 12 introduces fans to Abimael Ruiz. He “forces himself to begin each day,” and feels totally “miserable” as he’s laid in the same bed for seven years.

Thirty-seven-year-old Abi tells cameras his body is in “agony from being in the same position.” He adds “…the only light at the end of the tunnel” for him is his wife, Brenda. Abi’s weight was “unknown” at the beginning of his My 600-lb Life journey.

My 600-lb Life’s Abi

When TLC viewers first meet Abi, he’s gearing up for a long road ahead to essentially save his own life.

He’s bed-bound and only keeps going in life because of Brenda.

Abi explains how in 2014 he was in a car accident and lost feeling from his chest down.

The TLC star also tells cameras that because he’s been bedridden for so long, he has bed sores and lymphedema.

Abi struggles every single morning, explaining how the “worst part of his day” is extremely painful bathing and disinfecting carried out by his wife.

He grew up in Puerto Rico

As fans get a glimpse of daily life for Abi and Brenda, the patient’s wife can be seen rustling up scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, and toast for their breakfast.

Abi says: “Breakfast doesn’t have to be huge, it just has to be something to satisfy.”

He adds how what he eats now is a “giant improvement” on how he used to eat as a child.

Abi grew up in Puerto Rico and adds how he ate “Caribbean comfort food” but was “really skinny.”

When he hit the age of 14, and his height got to 6 ft 4 he said he began gaining weight.

He said: “I thought I’m young and my metabolism will kick in.”

Abi “ballooned to 450lb” after moving to Florida for college.

He returned to Puerto Rico and began working, his focus shifted from food for some time and he lost a lot of weight, he says around 100lb.

However, Abi later endured a car accident which resulted in no broken bones, but he had whiplash and lost feeling in his legs.

After meeting Abi in person, Dr Now said his patient’s condition was “much worse” than he thought.

He says: “He’s lost a lot of muscle, his hygiene is very poor, you can tell with the smell of the house…”

Where is Abi now?

Thankfully, Abi was one of Dr Now’s patients who truly stuck to his plan.

After hitting the goals he needed to, Abi gets approved for weight loss surgery in season 12.

Nowadays, the star appears to be in good spirits per his Facebook page.

Dr Now explains how he lost “300-350l,” and needed to lose another “170lb to get his legs to where they need to be for orthopaedic surgery to be able to walk again.”

When the doctor’s time with Abi was complete, he was still around 200lb away from his target weight. But, Dr Now said he was “proud” of what he’d achieved.

By month 12 of his My 600-lb Life journey, Abi’s weight was 403lbs and he lost a total of 325lb.
