The Liverpool job is now 'extraordinary' manager's if he wants it, set to be in charge next year - journalist

Journalist Alex Crook has shared where he expects Xabi Alonso to be next season with the manager one of the leading contenders to become the next Liverpool boss.

With the international break over, the end of the season is now in sight. And of course, this summer will not be an ordinary one for the Reds. Jurgen Klopp confirmed earlier this year that this campaign will be his last on Merseyside.

Understandably, a number of names have been linked with the job. Liverpool have re-established themselves as Premier League title contenders this season.

There is interest from Liverpool in Ruben Amorim. But of course, the standout candidate for many is Xabi Alonso. The Spaniard is doing an ‘extraordinary‘ job with Bayer Leverkusen, with the club on the cusp of winning the Bundesliga title.

Journalist would be staggered if manager wasn’t at Liverpool next season

Obviously, Alonso spent a few years of his playing career at Liverpool. So he would be a popular choice amongst the fans as the Reds face a monumental decision.

Speaking on the Premier League All Access podcast, Crook suggested that everything is pointing to Alonso taking the job this summer.

“I’d be staggered if Xabi Alonso isn’t in the Liverpool dug-out come the start of the season. It’s basically Alonso’s job if he wants it. And why would he not want it? Also, he’s going to win the Bundesliga this season with Bayer Leverkusen, what’s the point of going to Bayern Munich and winning the Bundesliga again? Surely, Liverpool is the bigger challenge,” he said.

The right choice for Reds

From the outside, it is hard to see why Alonso would not want the Liverpool job.

In fact, it was even claimed this week that Alonso had already agreed to succeed Klopp at Liverpool. So perhaps everything is being kept under wraps until Leverkusen and Liverpool have completed their respective title races.

Perhaps Liverpool could yet spring a surprise and look elsewhere. But if they do, it could be seen as a huge gamble.

Whoever replaces Klopp is going to need time and patience. And that will be easier for the fans if they are pleased with the appointment the club make.

If they look elsewhere from Alonso, a lot of fans may be disappointed or underwhelmed. And that may put Klopp’s successor under even more pressure.
