Watch: Ex-Rangers trialist brought down a peg or two by Manchester United legends

It’s fair to say Michael Stewart and the Rangers support has a strained relationship.

The ex-Hibs and Hearts midfielder has spent much of his media career building up a reputation around the Ibrox side.

The manner of Stewart’s Rangers baiting has somewhat evolved over the years, ranging from the more serious Jim Traynor-gate to nearly bursting into flames at the penalty awarded against Hibs last weekend.

A decision which others thought was absolutely correct, no less.

So you’ll forgive Rangers fans for indulging in a clip of ex-Manchester United pair Rio Ferdinand and Roy Keane talking about Michael Stewart on a podcast.

Rangers trialist Michael Stewart gets Roy Keane treatment

Michael Stewart famously came through the youth ranks at Manchester United before going on trial at Rangers in 2004.

Whilst that brief moment at Ibrox failed to result in a contract for the midfielder, Stewart did make eight league appearances at Old Trafford.

And it’s the four-times Scotland international’s stint with the Red Devils which has been the subject of a Rio Ferdinand and Roy Keane anecdote.

Speaking on the Stick to Football podcast, the hilarious interchange is sure to raise a wry smile from Rangers fans.

Michael Stewart transcript

Rio Ferdinand: “Do you remember Michael Stewart?”

Roy Keane: “Yeah, Michael Stewart. Yeah.”

RF: “Do you remember that one? Do you not remember?”

RK: “What, me with Michael?”

RF: “See how you used to sit on the ledge and do your leg swings before you go out to training. He’s a young lad, Scottish international, played every level…”

RK: “Yeah but he wasn’t quiet, he was bad for the table tennis, remember?”

RF: “I’m not saying he was a timid kid. He’s actually quite an open speaking guy now.”

RK: “He is, absolutely.”

RF: “He was there, I don’t know what triggered you (Keane), but I remember hearing you saying to him, I just came down the corridor and I could hear you going ‘you’ll never make it you. You’ll be playing for a pub team, The Swan or something like that if you carry on the way you are’.

RK: “I was right! He ended up at Hibs, Hibs and Hearts. That’s who he played for. I was trying to motivate him.”
