Wolves player ratings: Matheus Cunha runs the show as another ace shines vs Nottingham Forest

Wolves player ratings vs Nottingham Forest as a Matheus Cunha brace earned the visitors a 2-2 draw at the City Ground.

In a match full of errors, Wolves were unable to return to winning ways as they picked up a solid point in the East Midlands.

Cunha put the visitors ahead with a sensational solo goal in his first start since his injury. Forest then managed to turn the result on its head just before the hour mark with former academy player Morgan Gibbs-White getting on the scoresheet.

However, Cunha reduced the day as he tapped home from a corner to give Gary O’Neil’s side another point on the road.

He was a calm presence inside the box in the first half collecting plenty of loose balls throughout. This then paid off for the ‘keeper as another routine collection resulted in him firing the ball straight to Cunha as he went on to score. A great assist from Jose Sa.

Couldn’t have done anything about the two goals but made some great stops to keep the score level at 2-2 straight after Cunha’s equaliser.

RWB – Nelson Semedo – 6/10

Almost gifted Forest the opener when his poor pass found Giovanni Reyna who could only fire wide. It wasn’t Nelson Semedo’s greatest game with the full-back being constantly dispossessed. However, he managed to escape the match without a booking meaning he will not pick up a suspension.

One of his best games in a Wolves shirt. The Uruguayan won everything in the air against the ever-present Chris Wood. While it was another game without a clean sheet, the defender did little wrong.

CB – Max Kilman – 6/10

Got in the way of everything in the opening exchanges to prevent an early Forest opener. Was a bit shakey as the game went on but it was a solid performance from the captain.

Made an excellent challenge early in the first half on Danilo to prevent the hosts from going in front. Like Kilman, his performance dipped as the game went on but it was a solid showing from the centre-half.

LWB – Matt Doherty – 5/10

Didn’t cover himself in glory once again in the starting XI. After an okay first half, the defence seemed to collapse early in the second period. Doherty was part of this and was at fault for the second as his challenge landed straight at Danilo’s feet to score.

CM – Mario Lemina – 6/10

Not Mario Lemina’s most dominant display and he was treading on eggshells throughout after his yellow card. This hindered his display but still did enough to earn Wolves a point.

CM – Joao Gomes – 6/10

Was highly unlucky not to score when his shot was cleared off the line by the Forest defender. Should have prevented Gibbs-White’s goal as the midfielder was in the right position to clear the ball away from the net.

Seemed to lose his head a little a little in the second period and was treading on thin ice after his yellow card. O’Neil sensibly took the midfielder off around the hour mark.

CM – Tommy Doyle – 7/10

Sprayed the ball around with ease throughout the game and was central to each attack Wolves built. Another solid display from the midfielder just days after he was awarded by the PFA. Surely, he will be given a run of games until the end of the season.

ST – Pablo Sarabia – 5/10

He should have put Wolves in front when Joao Gomes’ rebounded shot fell to the Spaniard who could only fire wide. It was an open net yet, Sarabia could not hit the target from 10 yards.

Made a bad habit of giving the ball away in the second half on a bad day for the Spaniard.

ST – Matheus Cunha – 9/10

Wow. After being out of the line-up for months, Cunha announced his return at the City Ground. A fantastic solo effort saw the Brazilian run from the halfway line with the ball into the box. From here, he produced a great little bit of trickery to turn the Forest defender in the box before firing the ball into the top right corner of the net. One of the goals of the season.

Then, when Wolves needed to find a way back into the game Cunha pounced on a mistake from the Forest’s ‘keeper to tap home. Despite VAR’s efforts to once again rule out another goal from a corner, the goal stood.

Almost made an immediate impact upon his return to the pitch when he could have won a penalty with a quick, bursting run down the flank.

Added more of an attacking threat compared to Matt Doherty after his introduction.
